Help Alvin on his road to recovery!

Meet Alvin! A year-old male Akita mix, Alvin was brought to the Ontario SPCA as a stray in September 2016 and diagnosed to be heartworm positive. Heartworm is a parasite that lives in the heart of a dog and, if left untreated, can cause significant heart damage and, potentially, sudden death.

Heartworm is easily prevented with annual heartworm prevention that many owners get through their trusted veterinarian. But as a stray, Alvin had no one to care for his health and take proper care of him.

Thankfully, through the continued support of our communities and donors, Alvin has been given a second chance. For the past six months, Alvin has endured a very long and intensive recovery process. He underwent a series of three intense deep muscle injections and was prescribed pain medication, steroids and strict rest something that can be very difficult for a working dog breed!

Alvin has been a trooper throughout this ordeal. He is always a true gentleman, whether he’s at the veterinary clinic, our animal centre or in his foster home. Playful, curious and polite, Alvin loves to build strong relationships and is almost ready to find his loving forever home.

It has been a long road to recovery and it’s not over yet, which is why we need your support to help recover the costs of Alvin’s care while he recuperates. Please make a special gift today to help Alvin, and animals like him, get the life-saving care they require.

Be sure to check out our Facebook page where we’ll be sharing videos of Alvin so you can see the results of your support in action.

Together we save lives!
