January 2016

We celebrate yet another successful year at the Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Animal Centre. I would like to thank all of our partners who have contributed to our success. This includes our volunteers, our partnering shelters, medical professionals, College Boreal and also the Vet Tech Program. The wonderful staff at our Centre is truly great and we couldn’t do it without great support we receive from our team at the provincial office! Together, we make a difference!

 Winter dog

Should you walk your dog in the winter?

While winter dog walking can sometimes be a challenge, it’s important to meet your dog’s exercise needs all year round—even in the winter. Not only will this keep your dog physically active during the winter months, it’ll also provide much needed mental stimulation.

There are a few things to keep in mind for a safe winter walk. Read some of our great tips to get you through a long winter season.

“Red” Gets his Second Chance

“Red”, a 3-month-old male kitten was surrendered by his owner due to extensive injuries.  After examination and treatments at the vet clinic, we learned that Red had a fracture in the hip area, and would require surgery.

Red was sent to an orthopedic surgeon and his operation was a success!  He is recovering nicely at a foster home and is now able to do normal every day activities. We are thrilled that Red is getting the second chance he deserves and will soon be adopted by his new loving foster family.

Co-op Students Make a Difference

Alyssa is a high school co-op student from Sacré-Coeur High School in Sudbury. She is one of three students completing her placement with the Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Animal Centre. Alyssa puts her heart and soul into everything she does and has a great compassion for animals. She is always keen to learn new things and quick to give a helping hand.

With training and assistance from the staff, co-op students like Alyssa help out with many things including the general maintenance and cleaning of animals, dog enrichment programs, general cat cage cleaning and more!   Having the support form our local high schools with these programs has been truly beneficial to both the staff and the animals!

iAdopt for the Holidays a Huge Success

From November 1 – December 31, Ontario SPCA Animal Centres in partnership with 50 other participating SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada, ran the iAdopt for the Holidays adoption campaign with the goal of getting as many animals as possible adopted into loving, forever homes.

Over 5,000 animals, close to 1,500 of those from Ontario SPCA Animal Centres, found homes thanks to people like you either adopting or helping to spread the word.

The winner of our grand prize online contest, winning free pet food for a year courtesy of Royal Canin, was ‘Maggie’ the cat (pictured above) and her owners from Amherstburg, ON. Congratulations!

A big thank you to all who participated in this year’s campaign both online and through adopting an animal. You helped change lives this holiday season!

Animals Benefiting from College Partnership

In June of 2015, “Rosie”, a 5-month-old female coonhound type dog was surrendered by her owner as they were no longer able to care for her. Rosie was transferred to the Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Animal Centre and took part in the Veterinary Technician program at College Boreal.

Rosie, a shy girl who displayed some fearful and timid behaviors, was able to receive some behaviour modification through a program developed by both the veterinary Technician program and the staff at the Animal Centre. With great success, Rosie’ progress became increasingly better week after week. Once Rosie was spayed and ready to go, she spent some time in a foster home and continued her rehabilitation. On November 2nd, Rosie was adopted in her new loving home and has settled in great with her new hubby  coonhound “Geebüs”
