January 2016

Happy New Year!  This year our resolution is to decrease the stay of animals in our Centre by increasing adoptions!  You can help by spreading the word about our animals up for adoption on our website.  Looking forward to a very successful 2016!

 Winter dog

Should you walk your dog in the winter?

While winter dog walking can sometimes be a challenge, it’s important to meet your dog’s exercise needs all year round—even in the winter. Not only will this keep your dog physically active during the winter months, it’ll also provide much needed mental stimulation.

There are a few things to keep in mind for a safe winter walk. Read some of our great tips to get you through a long winter season.

Sky Playing

Forster Parent liz

“Sky” is Adopted!

Remember “Sky”? He was featured in our November issue of Newshound. The little black, 8-month-old boy had fallen from an 8th floor balcony and required surgery on his hips and had broken his front leg.

We are very thankful for Jill for fostering him and introducing him to his new family, friends of hers who visited often and couldn't get enough of this little guy. Congratulations Sky on finding your new forever home!

Thank you to everyone who donated towards his surgery to help make his adoption a success!  It’s thanks to your support that animals like Sky get the second chance they deserve.

Fabulous Foster Parent

Liz has proven to be a foster parent extraordinaire. Growing up on a farm, she brings an abundance of animal care experience including birthing, hand rearing, and bottle-feeding all sorts of animals, even some wildlife!

This summer, Liz and her family helped domesticate a litter of feral kittens, and took in a mother and her puppies, providing a stress-free environment to properly socialize and give them the best possible start. Thank you so much Liz for everything you do for all animals!

iAdopt for the Holidays a Huge Success

From November 1 – December 31, Ontario SPCA Animal Centres in partnership with 50 other participating SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada, ran the iAdopt for the Holidays adoption campaign with the goal of getting as many animals as possible adopted into loving, forever homes.

Over 5,000 animals, close to 1,500 of those from Ontario SPCA Animal Centres, found homes thanks to people like you either adopting or helping to spread the word.

The winner of our grand prize online contest, winning free pet food for a year courtesy of Royal Canin, was ‘Maggie’ the cat (pictured above) and her owners from Amherstburg, ON. Congratulations!

A big thank you to all who participated in this year’s campaign both online and through adopting an animal. You helped change lives this holiday season!

Ready for her Family

“Fiona” came into our care in early 2015 through an investigation. Sometimes a court case takes longer than anyone would like, but for Fiona, it gave her the time she needed to get healthy and ready for adoption.

When she first arrived, Fiona weighed only 8 lbs. but we are pleased to report she has since doubled her weight! The hair loss she suffered from malnutrition has mostly grown back and she is feeling much better. This power packed12-year-old spitfire is VERY ready for her family.

Come meet Fiona today and help us find this special girl a family.
