January 2016

I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you, our donors, sponsors, volunteers, and adopters for your amazing support. Over the past 12 months, 470 animals (including 273 cats and 153 dogs) found their forever homes, an increase of 62 more animals than in 2014. We truly couldn’t do all that we do in the community without your generous support, both financially and of time.

From all of us here at the Animal Centre ... Thank you !

 Winter dog

Should you walk your dog in the winter?

While winter dog walking can sometimes be a challenge, it’s important to meet your dog’s exercise needs all year round—even in the winter. Not only will this keep your dog physically active during the winter months, it’ll also provide much needed mental stimulation.

There are a few things to keep in mind for a safe winter walk. Read some of our great tips to get you through a long winter season.

Dixie

Thank You

A Special Time for “Dixie” and “Harley”

You may remember us telling you about “Dixie” and “Harley”, the two special Rottweiler-mix dogs that came into our care through an investigation. On arrival to our Centre, both dogs were emaciated and flea infested and poor Dixie had additional medical challenges including a large growth on her eye lid and mammary gland tumors.

We reached out to the public to help raise funds for her care and spread the word that she was in need of a new family. Well thanks to your help, both Dixie and her housemate Harley were adopted in December to such kind and giving families. Dixie even made a return visit just before the Holiday break, to let us see how much better she’s doing. There were hugs all around!

Gift Wrapping for the Animals

Last year, the Ontario SPCA Leeds & Grenville Animal Centre was honoured to be chosen as the 1000 Islands Mall’s Charity of Choice. As the selected charity, we were fortunate to host a number of events at the mall, including adopt-a-thons, our annual Telethon and a gift wrapping event.

During the week leading up to Christmas Eve, the Mall set aside their gift wrapping station with all funds raised directed to our Centre. We were pleased to have our volunteer Stephanie take the lead on this event. Stephanie and her team, wrapped gifts and spread good. They had a very fun and successful time, raising over $2,100 in donations from the wrapping of presents!

Thank you Stephanie and everyone involved for taking the time out of your busy schedules to help the animals in need.

iAdopt for the Holidays a Huge Success

From November 1 – December 31, Ontario SPCA Animal Centres in partnership with 50 other participating SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada, ran the iAdopt for the Holidays adoption campaign with the goal of getting as many animals as possible adopted into loving, forever homes.

Over 5,000 animals, close to 1,500 of those from Ontario SPCA Animal Centres, found homes thanks to people like you either adopting or helping to spread the word.

The winner of our grand prize online contest, winning free pet food for a year courtesy of Royal Canin, was ‘Maggie’ the cat (pictured above) and her owners from Amherstburg, ON. Congratulations!

A big thank you to all who participated in this year’s campaign both online and through adopting an animal. You helped change lives this holiday season!

Well Worth the Wait

“Maveric”, had the distinction of being our only dog available during a stretch of our iAdopt for the Holidays campaign in December. He had such an easy-going, laidback personality, and staff at the Centre couldn’t understand why he was the only one waiting for a forever family.

And then it happened! A family had seen him on our Meet your Match® website, and came into the Centre the next available day to meet him. It was an instant bond between all of them and we couldn’t be more pleased.

Happy adoption day on December 28th Maveric!
