Cottage Safety

Ticks

Cottage Safety

Its cottage time and we couldn’t me more excited!  There’s nothing better than finishing off the week by loading up the pets and heading out for a weekend in nature.

In preparation for cottage season, we have some pet safety reminders to help make your Spring/Summer season a great one for everyone.

The Truth About Ticks

Tick season has arrived and we ask Dave Wilson, Director of Shelter Health & Wellness for the Ontario SPCA and retired vet, what we need to know to help keep our pets safe.

Ticks are members of the spider family, and their bites can cause serious illness such as Tick Paralysis or even Lyme disease.  It’s important to learn tick prevention and treatment.

Read our two part series “PET HEALTH CORNER: The Truth about Ticks” and watch our You Tube Video “How to Remove a Tick” for more information.

School “Hang Out” was a Fundraising Success

We love seeing inspiring young people show their passion for Animal Welfare. Lolita, Jaden and Emelia were charged with raising money for the charity of their choice for a class project at Indian Creek Road Public School in Chatham, Ontario.

The girls organized a grade 7-8 “hang out” one evening with games and other fundraising activities. They were able to raise over $200 for the Ontario SPCA Chatham-Kent Animal Centre, using the proceeds to purchase food and other much-needed supplies for the cats and dogs. Great job, girls!
In Memory of Tina

The Ontario SPCA Chatham-Kent Animal Centre received a very touching gift in mid-April that was a wonderful surprise. Two dozen handmade dog toys were created by kids at the Solid Rock Cafe Youth Centre in memory of our late volunteer, Tina Beaudouin.

Tina was an integral part of our volunteer team, and is sorely missed. This gift was a beautiful tribute to keep Tina's memory alive in our hearts. Thanks to everyone who took part in creating these wonderful toys for the dogs at our Animal Centre.

No Excuses...No Hot Pets

I left the window down for him” “I wasn’t going to be gone long” We’ve heard it all! As you may know, the issue of owners leaving their pets in their vehicles during the hot summer months, putting animals’ safety at risk and even causing death, is an ongoing problem across Ontario. There is no excuse for leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle and this summer we need your help to share this important message.

Join us on May 24th by visiting nohotpets.ca for the official launch of our 2016 No Hot Pets campaign!

Dancing the Night Away

The 13th annual Furball Fete, presented by Cogeco, was held at Country View Golf Course on Saturday, April 23, 2016. The evening included a delicious dinner, close to 50 fantastic auction packages up for grabs, a 50/50 draw, and an amazing gourmet dinner raffle package put together by Dr. Fife from the Egan Fife Animal Hospital.

An incredible $7,000 was raised for the Ontario SPCA Chatham-Kent Animal Centre. Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers, Diane Morrison and Liz Dolson, and the generous businesses that supported the event!
