Bake a difference during National Cupcake Day™

Preheat those ovens! National Cupcake Day™ is coming up on Feb. 27 and you’re invited to help “bake” a difference for animals in need.

Now in its fifth year, National Cupcake Day is presented in partnership by the Ontario SPCA and BC SPCA and is a collaborative event to support local SPCAs and Humane Societies across the country.

To participate, register to host a National Cupcake Day party and invite co-workers, friends and family. Guests donate to the participating animal welfare charity of the host’s choice in exchange for a cupcake, raising critically-needed funds for animals that are abused, abandoned, neglected or no longer wanted. Cupcake Day parties can be held anywhere, and on any date in January or February.

Visit nationalcupcakeday.ca to register, bake and donate.

Newshound Cold Weather

Take extra precautions during cold weather

If it’s too cold for you to go outside, it’s too cold for your pet! Every year, the Ontario SPCA investigates thousands of complaints about animals left unprotected from winter weather. Exposure to harsh conditions can cause serious illness or death to animals, particularly during periods of freezing rain and rapid temperature fluctuations.

Keeping pets safe and healthy during the winter months doesn’t end with keeping them warm. There are other hazards to be aware of, including salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice on roads and sidewalks. They can burn your pet’s sensitive paws and can cause illness if ingested. Before your pet heads out into the great outdoors this winter, here’s what you need to know.

Foster farm adopts senior steed

We love happy endings! We had a horse named Cody come into our care through an investigation. The 25-year-old Paint gelding was emaciated and in very poor condition. As a senior equine, Cody was in need of some special care and TLC. His teeth are getting a bit worn out, making it difficult for him to chew his hay properly. Cody also has some mobility challenges. He has a condition called stringhalt that causes the stifle in his leg to lock up from time to time. Despite these issues, with proper care Cody is “pasture sound” and comfortable and is suitable as a companion horse.

We are happy to report that with quality food, extra attention and excellent veterinary care, including dental work, Cody gained over 200 pounds. He now looks and feels fabulous. He’s quite a character, with an engaging personality and zest for life, despite everything he has been through.

His foster barn family fell in love with him and decided that Cody will stay with them for the rest of his days. Cody will now enjoy his golden years while receiving the special care and attention he needs and deserves. This is truly an exciting chapter for Cody and we are forever grateful to all who contributed their time, attention and love to make this happen.

Congratulations to Cody and his new family!

Community rallies behind
Cee Cee

When we first met Cee Cee, the three-year-old cat was in severe pain. She was found badly injured in Huntsville by a concerned citizen who brought her to the Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre. We immediately rushed her to a local veterinary clinic where radiographs revealed she had a badly fractured leg. Due to the severity of her injuries, the decision was made to amputate her leg.

The cost of her care and rehabilitation was expensive and was expected to reach $2,000. We reached out to our community for help and, as always, we were not disappointed. A very generous donor came forward and covered the cost of Cee Cee’s care!

We are thrilled to report that not only was Cee Cee’s surgery and recovery a huge success, but she was also adopted just in time for Christmas.

Rescuing animals is at the heart of what we do. Without your support, new beginnings for animals like Cee Cee would not be possible. Together we save lives!

Over 5,300 animals find homes during iAdopt for the Holidays

iAdopt for the Holidays is over for another year and over 5,300 animals found loving homes through participating SPCAs, Humane Societies and rescue groups across Canada, including over 1,600 animals adopted through Ontario SPCA animal centres during the two-month adoption campaign.

iAdopt for the Holidays, supported by Royal Canin, took place from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 at participating SPCAs, Humane Societies and rescue groups nation wide. The goal of this annual event is to get as many animals as possible placed into loving homes during the holiday season. We are so pleased to say the campaign was a great success!

A big thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s campaign. You helped change the lives of animals in need this holiday season!

Find your pocket pal at the upcoming rat adopt-a-thon

Looking for a small, low-maintenance pet? Have you considered a rat? Ontario SPCA animal centres across the province recently welcomed a large number of these pocket-sized pets after close to 600 rats were removed from an apartment in North Bay.

To help find homes for our little friends, PetSmart will be hosting a rat adopt-a-thon from Jan. 21 to Feb. 12 at a number of stores across the province. Rats will be available for adoption for only $5 each at participating PetSmart locations in Sudbury, Barrie, Newmarket, Vaughan, East Brampton, Scarborough, Pickering, Whitby, Peterborough, Cornwall, Belleville, Kingston and North Bay, Richmond Hill and Toronto.

The rats are patiently waiting to find a loving home. Could it be yours?

Holiday open house raises close to $1,000

The Muskoka Animal Centre held its annual holiday open house on Saturday, Dec. 10 and it was a fun afternoon! We held a bake sale, photos with the Grinch and had pet gift baskets for sale. The event raised close to $1,000 for our animals at the centre! We enjoyed visiting with members of our community, friends, donors and volunteers. It was a great day and we look forward to our 2017 event.
