January 2017 The New Year is off to a great start and we’re lowering our cat and kitten adoption fees to only $75 to help them find homes. It’s a great way to serve our community and the cats within it. We can’t wait to welcome you to our centre to meet your match!
Bake a difference during National Cupcake Day™ Preheat those ovens! National Cupcake Day™ is coming up on Feb. 27 and you’re invited to help “bake” a difference for animals in need. Now in its fifth year, National Cupcake Day™ is presented in partnership by the Ontario SPCA and BC SPCA and is a collaborative event to support local SPCAs and Humane Societies across the country. To participate, register to host a National Cupcake Day™ party and invite co-workers, friends and family. Guests donate to the participating animal welfare charity of the host’s choice in exchange for a cupcake, raising critically-needed funds for animals that are abused, abandoned, neglected or no longer wanted. Cupcake Day parties can be held anywhere, and on any date in January or February. Visit nationalcupcakeday.ca to register, bake and donate.
Take extra precautions during cold weather If it’s too cold for you to go outside, it’s too cold for your pet! Every year, the Ontario SPCA investigates thousands of complaints about animals left unprotected from winter weather. Exposure to harsh conditions can cause serious illness or death to animals, particularly during periods of freezing rain and rapid temperature fluctuations. Keeping pets safe and healthy during the winter months doesn’t end with keeping them warm. There are other hazards to be aware of, including salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice on roads and sidewalks. They can burn your pet’s sensitive paws and can cause illness if ingested. Before your pet heads out into the great outdoors this winter, here’s what you need to know.
Yard sale helps give animals a second chance We had such an amazing turnout for our yard sale event on Dec. 3. We were able to meet and visit with lots of people from the community who came out to support the SPCA. There were lots of treasures to be found and gifts for furry friends. Thanks to generous donations and the purchase of many of the yard sale items, we were able to raise $575 for our animal centre. We appreciate everyone who came out to support us, as well as our invaluable volunteers who dedicated their time to help out with this event.	Animals find homes for the holidays Wow! What a turnout for our adoption event on Dec. 10. We saw lots of new and familiar faces who came out to have their pets photographed by Art by Agata. We also had lots of cats, kittens, dogs and even our special puppies from Midland adopted into wonderful loving homes. With treats and hot chocolate, the event was a great way to get into the holiday spirit. All of our staff and our volunteers enjoyed visiting with previous adopters and meeting our new adoption families. This successful event would not have been possible without the help and support of our amazing volunteers and staff, and the support shown by the community. From all of us here at the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre, we thank you for your continued support and dedication.
Over 5,300 animals find homes during iAdopt for the Holidays iAdopt for the Holidays is over for another year and over 5,300 animals found loving homes through participating SPCAs, Humane Societies and rescue groups across Canada, including over 1,600 animals adopted through Ontario SPCA animal centres during the two-month adoption campaign. iAdopt for the Holidays, supported by Royal Canin, took place from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 at participating SPCAs, Humane Societies and rescue groups nation wide. The goal of this annual event is to get as many animals as possible placed into loving homes during the holiday season. We are so pleased to say the campaign was a great success! A big thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s campaign. You helped change the lives of animals in need this holiday season!	Volunteers celebrated after 17 years of support We are so blessed and lucky to have such amazing and dedicated volunteers here at the Renfrew County Animal Centre. Jan. 1 of this year marked the 17th anniversary that Lea and Doug Thompson have been offering their support. Many of you may have met them at an event, at Bingo or running the front office. However, you might not realize all the wonderful things this power couple does to help support our centre each and every day. When we are short a volunteer for an event or in the front office, Lea and Doug always come to our rescue. They also are one of our many foster families that help out when we need it. Recently, they fostered some kittens and nursed them back to health so they could find loving homes.  When it comes to an event, Lea is always one of the first to start asking, “How can I help? What can I do? What do you need?” She is also quick to offer Doug’s assistance, and he always arrives with a smile. Lea and Doug are such an inspiration to us here at the centre and they dedicate so much of their time to ensuring we receive the help we need to keep our centre running. From all of us here at the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre, congratulations and thank you for being a valuable part of our team for 17 years.
Find your pocket pal at the rat adopt-a-thon Looking for a small, low-maintenance pet? Have you considered a rat? Ontario SPCA animal centres across the province recently welcomed a large number of these pocket-sized pets after close to 600 rats were removed from an apartment in North Bay. To help find homes for our little friends, PetSmart will be hosting a rat adopt-a-thon from Jan. 21 to Feb. 12 at a number of stores across the province. Rats will be available for adoption for only $5 each at participating PetSmart locations in Sudbury, Barrie, Newmarket, Vaughan, East Brampton, Scarborough, Pickering, Whitby, Peterborough, Cornwall, Belleville, Kingston and North Bay, Richmond Hill and Toronto.
