Cupcake Day kickoff was a sweet success
On Saturday, Jan. 28 the Creative Cook in
Bracebridge hosted our National Cupcake Day™ for
SPCA’s and Humane Societies kickoff. Held during the Fire and Ice Festival in
Bracebridge, it was a great day for all.
Not only were there many fun and
fantastic outdoor activities for families and friends to enjoy, but there was also
a National Cupcake Day introduction! Cupcake decorating and information on
National Cupcake Day participation was organized by Beth at the Creative Cook
and we truly appreciate her support. Also, big thanks to volunteer Karen Hyatt
for assisting with the event!
There’s still time left to organize your very own National Cupcake Day™
party and “bake” a difference in the lives of animals in need.
To participate, visit nationalcupcakeday.ca
to register to host a National Cupcake Day party and invite co-workers,
friends and family. Guests donate to the participating animal welfare charity
of the host’s choice in exchange for a cupcake, raising critically-needed funds
for animals that are abused, abandoned, neglected or no longer wanted.

Renegade is looking for
greener pastures
Renegade is looking for that special place to call home. This Quarter
Horse-type grade mare is about 12 years old and stands 14.2 hands. She gets
along well in a mixed herd and is an easy keeper. Since she is a rescue, no
prior history is available. Renegade has lovely ground manners and is very
social with people. She enjoys being groomed and fussed over. She lunges, cross
ties and trailers well.
Renegade is a now working nicely under saddle and is a very willing and
sensible partner. She stands well for mounting and will do a good whoa, walk,
jog and backup. She is also doing well navigating some trail obstacles and
hacks out well. Renegade is still green at the lope/canter and needs more work
on her transitions and pace. We started her Western but have transitioned her
to English at this time.
Renegade is a super mare who should make an excellent pleasure/trail partner
for an intermediate or above rider.
Please contact 705-645-6225 for more information.

Snuggles found her
forever family
Snuggles
is thrilled to report that at long last she has chosen a new family to call her
own! This nine-year-old Rottweiler cross was surrendered to the Muskoka Animal Centre
as her owner could no longer care for her.
Snuggles had some skin issues on
arrival and, following a thorough examination by a veterinarian, she was
prescribed antibiotics, medicated baths and a hypoallergenic diet.
We are happy
to report that with the right medical and nutritional care, her skin has
cleared up. We are so pleased to see this special canine on her way home and
look forward to many updates and, hopefully, some in-person visits, too!
Happy
trails and tales for Snuggles and her new family!

Do you know the signs of hypothermia?
Winter is far from over and there are still many cold days ahead. If your pet enjoys being outside and thrives on fresh air and exercise, they could be at risk of hypothermia. Would you recognize the signs if your pet was suffering from hypothermia and would you know what to do?
Prevention is half the battle when it comes to keeping your pets warm and safe. For some pets, their fur coats can protect them to a certain extent outside, but only when there’s no breeze. If the breeze is enough to lift the fur, their vulnerable skin is exposed to the cold. This is why it’s critical to listen to weather reports to hear not only the temperature, but also the wind chill values. If your pet is outside, they need to have ready and accessible access to a proper shelter so they can get out of the wind when they need to.
Visit our blog for more prevention tips and to learn more about the signs of hypothermia and how treat it.

Hundreds of rats find homes at PetSmart® adopt-a-thon
Remember the large number of rats we took into our care in late December when nearly 600 were removed from an apartment in North Bay and transferred to Ontario SPCA animal centres and humane societies across the province?
To help us find loving homes for our little friends, PetSmart® hosted a rat adopt-a-thon, sponsored by PetSmart Charities®, at a number of stores across the province from Jan. 21 to Feb. 12. We’re thrilled to report that over 350 of these pocket-sized pets were adopted!
That’s a lot of happy rats in loving new homes!
Looking for a smart, low-maintenance pet? Consider adopting a rat! Visit our blog to learn more about why rats make great pets, as well as tips on caring for your pet rat.
