Hyska’s Independent Grocer raises $500
Our local Hyska’s Independent Grocer recently held a Cupcake
Party the weekend of Jan. 21-22 at their location here in Petawawa. The event
was a huge success, offering paw print face painting and some really fancy cat
and dog cupcakes.
In total, Hyska’s raised $500 for the Renfrew County Animal
Centre in support of National Cupcake Day! It is truly amazing to be part of
such an amazing supportive community here in Petawawa, with businesses like
Hyska’s Independent Grocer lending their support to our animal centre.
Want to “bake” a difference for animals in need? Visit nationalcupcakeday.ca to register to host a National Cupcake Day™ party and invite
co-workers, friends and family. Guests donate to the participating animal
welfare charity of the host’s choice in exchange for a cupcake, raising critically-needed funds for
animals that are abused, abandoned, neglected or no longer wanted.

Close to 700 cupcakes sold during
Cupcake Day kickoff party
What an amazing day we had
at the Pembroke East End Mall for our National Cupcake Day™ kick-off party on
Jan. 21.
The day started with little girls dressed up in princess outfits
waiting to meet our special guests Belle, from Beauty and the Beast, and Tinker Belle, from Peter Pan!
We sold nearly 60 dozen cupcakes
and raised over $1,400 for our local animal centre here in Renfrew County.
Thanks to our amazing community and dedicated bakers and volunteers for your
support in making our event this year such a huge success. It was a very close
competition between our cat lovers vs dog lovers friendly fundraising rivalry,
with the dog team taking the win! But truly, in the end, all animals at the
Renfrew County Animal Centre won thanks to the generous donations we received
at our event.
The competition isn’t over
yet! Keep watching our Facebook page for more events to come in February. We
will continue the cats vs. dogs theme at each of our events, so come out and
vote for your team to see who wins.

New animal enrichment program starting
soon
Shelter stress is a very real concept for some animals in a
shelter environment. Those affected
exhibit stress in different ways at different times,
but one factor is the same: they are unable to handle basic life in an animal
centre.
That's where animal enrichment comes in. We would like to start a new animal
enrichment program here at the Renfrew County Animal Centre. In order to make
this new program a success we will need some help creating new flexible housing
designs and enrichment toys. We understand not everyone has the availability to
come into our animal centre to volunteer, but that’s part of what makes this
project great. Many of the new enrichment items can be created right at your
home and brought into the shelter.
We are so excited about this
new program that will benefit the animals in our centre. If you can help,
please call Danielle at 613-588-4508 or e-mail dbrunette@ospca.on.ca

Do you know the signs of hypothermia?
Winter is far from over and there are still many cold days ahead. If your pet enjoys being outside and thrives on fresh air and exercise, they could be at risk of hypothermia. Would you recognize the signs if your pet was suffering from hypothermia and would you know what to do?
Prevention is half the battle when it comes to keeping your pets warm and safe. For some pets, their fur coats can protect them to a certain extent outside, but only when there’s no breeze. If the breeze is enough to lift the fur, their vulnerable skin is exposed to the cold. This is why it’s critical to listen to weather reports to hear not only the temperature, but also the wind chill values. If your pet is outside, they need to have ready and accessible access to a proper shelter so they can get out of the wind when they need to.
Visit our blog for more prevention tips and to learn more about the signs of hypothermia and how treat it.

Hundreds of rats find homes at PetSmart® adopt-a-thon
Remember the large number of rats we took into our care in late December when nearly 600 were removed from an apartment in North Bay and transferred to Ontario SPCA animal centres and humane societies across the province?
To help us find loving homes for our little friends, PetSmart® hosted a rat adopt-a-thon, sponsored by PetSmart Charities®, at a number of stores across the province from Jan. 21 to Feb. 12. We’re thrilled to report that over 350 of these pocket-sized pets were adopted!
That’s a lot of happy rats in loving new homes!
