Time is running out to register for
National Cupcake Day™
National
Cupcake Day™ for SPCAs and Humane Societies is Feb. 27. If you haven't yet
registered to host a Cupcake Day Party, there's still time to get involved and
bake a difference in the lives of animals in need.
We want your
Cupcake Day experience to be a sweet one for you and your guests, which is why
we asked celebrity chef Anna Olson to share a mouth-watering cupcake recipe
that is sure to win over even the toughest critics. Visit our blog to see Anna Olson’s
Chocolate Peppermint Cupcake recipe.
Have friends
with dogs? Another fun alternative or addition to a Cupcake Day Party is a
Pupcake Party. Your event will go to the dogs – literally – when you offer Fido
and his friends a canine-friendly cupcake. To help inspire
you, we wanted to share this great “pupcake” recipe from Anna Olson. Definitely worth a try!
Now in its fifth year, National
Cupcake Day is presented in partnership by the Ontario SPCA and BC SPCA and is
a collaborative event to support local SPCAs and
humane societies across the country.
To participate, visit nationalcupcakeday.ca to register to host a National Cupcake Day party and invite
co-workers, friends and family. Guests donate to the participating animal
welfare charity of the host’s choice in exchange for a cupcake, raising critically-needed
funds for animals that are abused, abandoned, neglected or no longer wanted.

Writing to make a
change
Recently,
the students of Mme. Dubeau’s Grade 3 French Immersion class at R.L. Beattie
Public School were presented with a challenge: what would you do to help others
if you were given $100? The students were then given a writing assignment to
describe which organization they would select to donate the funds to and what
they would do with the money.
The
students came up with several organizations they felt passionately about and
the Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Animal Centre was one of four
organizations selected to help care for sick, neglected and abused animals. One
student felt that $100 was not enough to distribute amongst the four
organizations. As a result, Leila Barsanti decided to collect donations in lieu
of gifts at her birthday party and raised over $300 to add to the initial
donation.
On behalf of the staff and
animals here at the centre, we would like to send a special thank you to all of
the students who wrote about the Ontario SPCA, and a huge thank you to Leila
for her generosity and kindness. Your support will help provide our animals
with much-needed care and assist in finding them loving forever homes.

After months of
rehabilitation, Sasha found a new home
Sasha,
a four-year-old Shepherd mix, came into our care last September and was severely
emaciated. She had significant hair loss and was covered in “elephant skin.” In
a nutshell, Sasha was suffering from a skin allergy to a food and/or
environmental allergen, which caused the thick layer of itchy skin to develop.
After
months of care and a number of trials to determine the allergens responsible
for her reaction, Sasha’s skin cleared up, her hair grew back and she returned
to a healthy weight. A rambunctious and affectionate pooch, Sasha brought much
joy and happiness to everyone here.
She was recently adopted by a retired couple from the
Renfrew area who have many acres of land for Sasha to romp and play. We couldn’t
be happier for her and wish her the best of success in her new forever home.

Do
you know the signs of hypothermia?
Winter is far from over and there are still many cold days ahead. If your
pet enjoys being outside and thrives on fresh air and exercise, they could be
at risk of hypothermia. Would you recognize the signs if your pet was suffering
from hypothermia and would you know what to do?
Prevention is half the battle when it comes to keeping your pets warm and
safe. For some pets, their fur coats can protect them to a certain
extent outside, but only when there’s no breeze. If the breeze is enough to
lift the fur, their vulnerable skin is exposed to the cold. This is why it’s
critical to listen to weather reports to hear not only the temperature, but
also the wind chill values. If your pet is outside, they need to have ready and
accessible access to a proper shelter so they can get out of the wind when
they need to.Visit our blog for more prevention tips and to
learn more about the signs of hypothermia and how treat it.

Injured German Shepherd on the mend
Dogs love
to play in the snow and our new friend Meesha, a two-year-old German Shepherd,
is no exception.
On a
recent snowy day, Meesha was chasing snow from a snow blower when she got her
paw stuck in the turning auger of the machine, fracturing a number of bones in
her foot. Unable to pay the costs of her veterinary bills, her owners
surrendered her. Fortunately, we were able to get Meesha treated immediately by
a local orthopedic surgeon who was able to save her leg and repair the
fractures.
Meesha has
been undergoing a rigorous post-operative treatment plan, including limited
mobility, as well as physiotherapy and stretching. We’re pleased to report that
she is progressing very well. Once recovered, she will be available for
adoption.
As a result
of your generous support, we are able to provide care to injured animals like
Meesha. Please make a special gift
today to help Meesha, and animals like her, get the life-saving care they
require. To donate, visit our website or
contact the Sudbury & District Animal Centre at 705-566-9582.
All of the animals here thank you for your generosity and support.
