Take the No Hot Pets Pledge
“I wasn’t going to be gone
long.” “I left the window down for him.” The Ontario SPCA has heard it all as people continue to put their pets
at risk by leaving them in vehicles during the hot summer months.
Parked cars can quickly
reach deadly temperatures – even on relatively mild days with the car parked in
the shade and the windows slightly open. Dogs have a limited ability to sweat;
even a short time in a hot environment can be life-threatening.
Let’s work
together to eradicate this issue in Ontario. Visit nohotpets.ca and take the
pledge vowing to never leave your pets unattended in a vehicle. You can also do
your part to raise awareness by using #nohotpets on social media.
Join us on May 23 by visiting nohotpets.ca for the official launch of our 2017 No Hot Pets campaign!

Enter the Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ Contest
Time is running out to enter the Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest. Nominate your favourite veterinarian
or veterinary clinic by May 21 for the 2017 “Got a Pet? Get a Vet! Award”
and encourage friends and family to go to the gotapetgetavet.ca website to vote
for the winner.
If you have a pet, it’s
important to build a relationship with a veterinarian. Just one checkup a
year will help protect your pets against a variety of potentially
life-threatening diseases, detect health problems sooner and help you avoid
unexpected costs.
Got a Pet?
Get a Vet!™ is an annual education campaign by the Ontario SPCA, in association
with the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) and participating SPCAs
and Humane Societies across Canada. It promotes and educates owners about the
importance of annual veterinary checkups.

New dog yard has tails
wagging
Our dogs are looking forward to their newly
fenced-in exercise yard, which is currently being built. This new 180’ x 80’
area is a place for our dogs to enjoy some enrichment time with staff and
volunteers.
This fantastic new addition to the Ontario
SPCA Orillia Animal Centre was made possible thanks to a generous donor, who is
funding its installation, as well as numerous local businesses that are
donating supplies such as fill and mulch. We can’t thank them enough for making
this project possible!
To make the park even better, we’re hopeful some
agility equipment might be donated to help us create an engaging and extra fun
yard for the dogs! If you happen to have any equipment that you are no longer
using, we would be happy to accept it.

Volunteers
are crucial to our centre
We celebrated our volunteers during National Volunteer Week,
which ran from April 23-29.
National
Volunteer Week is a time to recognize, celebrate and thank our volunteers for
their hard work. This is the seventh consecutive year the Ontario SPCA,
together with Volunteer Canada, has celebrated this important week.
It was wonderful to
connect with each of you – our volunteers – and enjoy some laughs over coffee
and treats. Our centre is so fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers who
truly are ambassadors for the Ontario SPCA. We look forward to working with you
in the years ahead!

Are your pets prepared for an emergency?
May 8-12 was Emergency Preparedness Week and the Ontario SPCA took the opportunity to remind pet owners of ways to keep pets safe during emergency situations.
First, develop a family emergency response plan. This includes setting a primary and alternative meeting point away from the home in case of evacuation, listing emergency telephone numbers where all family members can find them (including the name and number of your pet’s veterinarian) and putting together a family emergency survival kit. Next, create a pet emergency survival kit for quick and easy access.
It is also important to bring your pets indoors at the first indication of an emergency. If you must evacuate your home, take your pets with you if it is safe to do so. In case you have to leave your pets behind, place a Rescue Alert Sticker by your front door. To get your free emergency decal to place on your front window or door, visit www.ontariospca.ca/ep

Community comes together for Spay-ghetti dinner
We held our Spay-ghetti dinner on Friday April 28, 2017 and it was a wonderful event that saw over 100 people come out to support our centre and brought in over $3,200 with sponsorship from RBC.
Thank you to all of the folks who provided spaghetti sauce, the donors who provided silent auction items, Brewery Bay Food Co. for the delicious Caesar salad and McDonald’s for the fabulous coffee. Thank you, also, to Don Porter of the Geneva Event Centre for the use of your wonderful centre!
Of course, the evening would not have been so successful without our outstanding volunteers from RBC branches in Orillia, who made everything go so smoothly.
Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, and to our community members who came out to show their support.

Boots
found a loving home
We love sharing happy adoption stories and this photograph
of Boots seems to say it all.
This tuxedo boy has such a sweet personality and quickly
won over his new “daddy.”
Boots arrived at our centre when he was eight months old
after his previous owner surrendered him due to allergies. He was only here a
week before he caught the eye of his family. He was so happy to be adopted and
snuggled right into the arms of his adopter as if to say, “Thank you for giving
me a second chance.”
Do you have room in your home and in your heart to help an
animal in need? If you’re considering getting a pet, visit our adoption page to
see the animals in our centre that are patiently waiting for a family to call
their own.
