Friends of the Friends For Life! Walk™ presented by Pedigree®

A special girl in need of a special home

Last month we had a beautiful cat arrive in our centre that has special needs and needs a special home.

Babe is a six-year-old spayed female. She is super sweet, a little bit nervous, but absolutely full of love and cuddles once she warms up to you! She would thrive in a quiet home where she can enjoy relaxing with you.

Babe is FIV positive. She was diagnosed early in life with this immunodeficiency disease and has always been a happy, healthy cat. Feline FIV cannot be transferred to humans or other animals. It can only be transferred cat to cat through deep bite wounds, and sometimes from a mother cat to her babies.

Most infected cats have a normal life expectancy and do not show symptoms. However, they are prone to developing other infections. As a result, Babe will require a low-stress home where she is kept indoors and fed a nutritionally balanced diet. She will also require regular veterinary checkups.

If you are interested in welcoming Babe into your family, visit our adoption website, drop by our animal centre at 48 East St. in Goderich, or call us at 519-440-0250

Water safety for dogs

Water can be a great source of fun for you and your dog, but before you take your pooch out for a paddle, make sure you know how to keep them safe.

Below are some tips to help keep your pets cool this summer:

  • Not all dogs are good swimmers! Don’t assume your dog will be fine, NEVER push them in, and NEVER leave your dog unsupervised by any body of water.
  • Outfit your four-legged friend with a dog life-jacket. Any dog, even “water breeds,” can become fatigued and need the safety and support of a dog life jacket. Do not try to modify a human life jacket for this use.
  • Watch out for strong currents and rapids, which can be a danger to you both.
  • Rinse your pet off after they have been in any type of water. Bacteria, salt, chlorine, algae and pollution can irritate their skin.
  • Dry your dog’s ears completely to prevent infection.
  • Learn canine CPR. Mouth-to-nose resuscitation and chest compressions could save a dog’s life in an emergency.
  • Don’t let your dog drink lake or river/stream water. Bacteria and parasites in this water can make your dog ill. Bring fresh water with you to keep your dog hydrated.
  • Keep dogs away from fishing gear.

Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest winner crowned

We would like to congratulate this year’s Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest winner, Dr. Renee Ferguson and her clinic Mountain View Veterinary Hospital in Langley, BC!

The Ontario SPCA launched this contest in association with the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) and other participating SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada.

From April 24 to May 21, we asked pet owners to help us recognize veterinarians and vet clinics that go above and beyond to provide excellent care for pets in their community by submitting their vet, and voting.

The response was incredible. During the contest we received 1,960 submissions from across Canada.

We’d like to thank those who participated in this year’s contest, and congratulate all those who were nominated for this award.

Northern dogs and cats are on their way to new homes

Close to 60 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens from Northern Ontario travelled south last month to find new homes thanks to a partnership between the Ontario SPCA’s Provincial Animal Transfer Team and two Indigenous communities.

By invitation to help the community manage its local dog population, the Ontario SPCA Provincial Animal Transfer Team worked with the Wabaseemoong Independent Nation, located 120 kilometres northwest of Kenora. The team also travelled to Mishkeegogamang First Nation, another community partner, where they picked up more dogs and puppies as well as some cats and kittens.

With support from volunteers and various partners, the animals were transferred to southern Ontario to be placed up for adoption with the help of the Ontario SPCA Animal Centres and the Welland & District SPCA.

Resources are always a challenge in Indigenous communities and access to veterinary care is very limited. We are pleased to be able to assist them by providing the resources they require for the animals in their community.

Thank you to everyone for their continued support of our Provincial Animal Transfer Program. To learn how you can support our re-homing efforts, visit ontariospca.ca

Keep your pets cool this summer!

With temperatures starting to rise, we would like to remind animal owners to be mindful of their pets in the heat. Be responsible and make sure your pets have a cool place to rest, and lots of water.Below are some tips to help keep your pets cool this summer:

  • Supply lots of fresh, clean water. On hot days, put a few ice cubes in your pet’s water bowl to cool it down.
  • Leave your pets at home in air conditioning on hot days. If you don’t have air conditioning, bring out a fan so your pet can cool off as needed.
  • Close your curtains, this will keep your house and pets substantially cooler.
  • Make rooms with bare floors accessible. Your pet may enjoy relaxing on that cooler surface.
  • Don’t over-exercise your pets in the heat.
  • Avoid walking your dog on hot surfaces like asphalt and try to walk your dog during cooler times of the day, such as early morning or late evening.
  • If your dog likes to be outdoors, be sure to provide proper shelter so your dog can get out of direct sunlight.
  • Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle.
Visit the Ontario SPCA blog at ontariospca.ca for more heat safety tips and tips on how to recognize heat stress and heat stroke in animals.
