Friends
of the Friends For Life! Walk™ presented by Pedigree®
Lee Duguid is a friend of the Friends for Life! Walk. In her

$610. Now, 24 years later, Lee is still an active participant and, for
the past eight years, has been the top fundraiser in the province. She has
raised a total of over $79,000! When asked why Lee participates year after year
in the walk, her answer is simple, “I don’t feel people realize how much dogs
and animals do for us. We receive such loyalty and unconditional love from
animals and I think we should treat them as they treat us!”
Regardless of whether you raise $10 or $1,000 in the
Friends For Life! Walk, you are making a difference for animals in Ontario. Register today and help change
animals’ lives, one step at a time!

Grade
8 students raise close to $600 at bake sale
Thank you to Lauren Rankine, Katie Malapitan, Madi
Torkoff, Jessica Reid, Paris Sceeles and their teacher Teresa Cowan, from
Windham Ridge Public School in Richmond Hill, for their donation to the Ontario
SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre.
Back in the winter of 2017, Lauren was listening to the
radio and heard about National Cupcake Day™ for SPCAs & Humane Societies. She
discussed this with her friends and then went to share the idea of a bake sale
with her school principal. What resulted was a week-long cookie sale where
these Grade 8 students raised over $596 for the Provincial Education &
Animal Centre.
What an amazing way to support animals and have fun at
the same time. We want to thank these young ladies for making a difference for
Animal Welfare in their community!
It’s not too early to start planning for next year’s
National Cupcake Day, which takes place on Feb. 26, 2018. Pre-registration is
now open.

Camping
with your pet 101
Planning a camping trip this summer? If you’re thinking of bringing your dog on your next adventure, here
are some tips to keep in mind to ensure it’s a positive experience for you,
your pet and your fellow campers.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Keep your dog on a leash of less than two metres at all times.
- Pick
up and dispose of your dog’s waste in the garbage.
- Keep
your dog from chasing/harassing wildlife.
- Use
designated “dog beaches” only for swimming.
- If
your dog is a “barker,” avoid the stress and consider not bringing Fido on
this trip.
- If
bugs are bothering your dog, consult with your veterinarian about the best
bug repellent option for your pet.
- Be
sure to check park regulations before reserving your site as not all
campgrounds allow dogs.
With these tips in mind, enjoy summer camping
with your dog!

We would
like to congratulate this year’s Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest winner, Dr.

The Ontario

Canada.
From April
24 to May 21, we asked pet owners to help us recognize veterinarians and
vet clinics that go above and beyond to provide excellent care for pets in
their community by submitting their vet, and voting.
The response was
incredible. During the contest we received 1,960 submissions from across
Canada.
We’d like to
thank those who participated in this year’s contest, and congratulate all those

Northern dogs and cats are on their way to new homes
Close to 60 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens from Northern Ontario travelled south last month to find new homes thanks to a partnership between the Ontario SPCA’s Provincial Animal Transfer Team and two Indigenous communities.
By invitation to help the community manage its local dog population, the Ontario SPCA Provincial Animal Transfer Team worked with the Wabaseemoong Independent Nation, located 120 kilometres northwest of Kenora. The team also travelled to Mishkeegogamang First Nation, another community partner, where they picked up more dogs and puppies as well as some cats and kittens.
With support from volunteers and various partners, the animals were transferred to southern Ontario to be placed up for adoption with the help of the Ontario SPCA Animal Centres and the Welland & District SPCA.
Resources are always a challenge in Indigenous communities and access to veterinary care is very limited. We are pleased to be able to assist them by providing the resources they require for the animals in their community.
Thank you to everyone for their continued support of our Provincial Animal Transfer Program. To learn how you can support our re-homing efforts, visit ontariospca.ca

Wanted: Large dog crates
The Ontario SPCA Provincial Education
& Animal Centre is in great need of large wire dog crates and large plastic
dog crates. These supplies are crucial to Animal Welfare in your community.
If you have a large plastic or large wire dog crate,
or would like to purchase one in kind to the Provincial Education & Animal
Centre, you will be directly supporting animal transfers for much-needed
veterinary care, transfers to other animal centres and humane societies and
life-saving transfer programs that enable animals from across the province to
find their furr-ever home.
Your support goes a long way in providing
the resources needed to save lives in your community. If you can help by
donating a dog crate, please drop by our animal centre for a visit. We would
love to meet you and we know the dogs will be happy you stopped by with a
special gift!
