animals and I think we should treat them as they treat us!”

Breast cancer survivor
finds comfort in feline friend
When
Michelangelo came to our centre, his fur was extremely matted and we needed to
shave him to allow his coat to grow back in full and beautiful. He got a new
look and a new name – Apollo.
During
his first few days at our centre, we also had a new volunteer start with us
named Tracy. Tracy is a one-year, post-treatment, breast cancer survivor.
During her cancer treatments, Tracy’s pets never left her side and gave her comfort
during her battle. So, when she came to the centre to talk to us about
volunteering, we were so happy and blessed to have such an amazing person join
our family at the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre.
Tracy
started volunteering with us on a Monday and by Wednesday had decided that she
was going to adopt Apollo because she could relate to what he was going
through. Both Tracy and Apollo were recovering from their hair loss and now
could go through the journey together as they started growing back their hair.
Apollo
is doing very well in his new home. Tracy brings him in to visit often and he
arrives on his leash, wearing cool-looking t-shirts to protect his skin while
the fur is growing back. These two are a perfect match and continue to give
each other comfort.
We
are truly lucky to have a volunteer like Tracy who shows us every day what the
true meaning of strength, determination and hope is. She is an inspiration to
us all!

What you need to know before camping with your pet
Planning a camping trip this summer?
If you’re thinking of bringing your dog on your next adventure, here are some tips to keep in mind to ensure it’s a positive experience for you, your pet and your fellow campers. Here’s what you need to know:
- Keep your dog on a leash of less than two metres at all times.
- Pick up and dispose of your dog’s waste in the garbage.
- Keep your dog from chasing/harassing wildlife.
- Use designated “dog beaches” only for swimming.
- If your dog is a “barker,” avoid the stress and consider not bringing Fido on this trip.
- If bugs are bothering your dog, consult with your veterinarian about the best bug repellent option for your pet.
- Be sure to check park regulations before reserving your site as not all campgrounds allow dogs.
With these tips in mind, enjoy summer camping with your dog!

Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest winner crowned
We would like to congratulate this year’s Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest winner, Dr. Renee Ferguson and her clinic Mountain View Veterinary Hospital in Langley, BC!
The Ontario SPCA launched this contest in association with the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) and other participating SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada.
From April 24 to May 21, we asked pet owners to help us recognize veterinarians and vet clinics that go above and beyond to provide excellent care for pets in their community by submitting their vet, and voting.
The response was incredible. During the contest we received 1,960 submissions from across Canada.
We’d like to thank those who participated in this year’s contest, and congratulate all those who were nominated for this award.

Mark your calendar for
a microchip clinic
We
recently held a microchip clinic on May 13 at the Pembroke Animal Hospital.
What a great day we had! There were over 40 people who registered and we still
had some room for a few walk-ins. It was so great to meet so many wonderful pet
owners and their animals.
Have
peace of mind by microchipping your pet! It’s simple, painless and offers a
life-time of worry-free ID.
If you are interested in having your pet
microchipped, we will be hosting another clinic on Saturday, Nov. 18 at the
Pembroke Animal Hospital.
Please
keep checking out our Facebook page and website for updates and times.
