Friends of the Friends For Life! Walk™ presented by Pedigree®

Lee Duguid is a friend of the Friends for Life! Walk. In her first year participating in the Friends for Life! Walk™ she raised a total of $610. Now, 24 years later, Lee is still an active participant and, for the past eight years, has been the top fundraiser in the province. She has raised a total of over $79,000! When asked why Lee participates year after year in the walk, her answer is simple, “I don’t feel people realize how much dogs and animals do for us. We receive such loyalty and unconditional love from animals and I think we should treat them as they treat us!”

Regardless of whether you raise $10 or $1,000 in the Friends For Life! Walk, you are making a difference for animals in Ontario. Register today and help change animals’ lives, one step at a time!

Fundraise & WIN

Sophie finds loving home after suffering severe neglect

Sophie was brought to the Ontario SPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Animal Centre back in April in horrific condition and had to have her leg amputated. The seven-year-old Shih-Tzu was so badly matted that her hair cut off the blood supply to her left hind leg. She had languished like that for months until her leg became gangrenous. By the time she came to us, there was nothing that could be done to save her leg.

It’s a sad story of neglect, but it has a happy ending. We’re overjoyed to tell you that she has found a loving home! She has been through so much and now has a family who will love her and care for her as she adjusts to life on three legs.

“She has already brought so much joy to our home,” reports her adopter. “She has adjusted very well and fits right in like she has been with us forever. We truly believe she was meant to become part of our family.”

Thank you to our generous supporters for giving animals like Sophie a second chance. Together, we change lives! Visit our website to find out how you can help.

Sam finds a new home with adopted friend

This is Sam and Taz. Sam is a one-and-a half-year-old Coonhound mix who originally came to us in December. He was adopted in January, but was returned because his owners developed allergies.

Sam patiently waited in our centre for the day a new family would walk through the doors and take him home. That day came when a dog named Taz needed a friend. Taz is a Husky mix who was adopted from our centre about two years ago.

His family decided to add another dog to the family and came to see us to meet the dogs up for adoption. They met Sam and immediately fell in love with his quiet demeanor.

But would their dog Taz like Sam just as much as they did? They brought Taz in to meet Sam and there was an instant bond between the two.

We wish Sam all the best in his new home!

Dads are in the spotlight this Father’s Day

Father’s Day is almost here and we’ve got two great ways you can celebrate papas with pets everywhere!

We’re asking all you pet lovers out there to grab your camera, snap your best “father and pet” photos, and share them on Twitter and Instagram using #DadsBFF or on our photo gallery at pawsandgive.ca. Don’t forget – if you’re a man with a pet, you’re a father, too! So go "fetch" your selfie-stick and share the love with us. You could win an awesome Father’s Day prize pack for you and your pet!

Looking for the perfect gift for dad? We’ve got you covered. Click here now to see our catalogue of great gift ideas. By choosing any of the gifts in our catalogue, you can give dad the joy of knowing he’s helping save the lives of pets in need, just like his favourite friend. With each gift, you can even send a custom e-card to dad’s e-mail with a greeting, or print it out at home instead. Give care for a cat, or dog, or a gift of urgent need.

This is your opportunity to rethink the traditional Father’s Day gift. This year, you can make Father’s Day extra special for pet lovers and pets alike!

What you need to know before camping with your pet

Planning a camping trip this summer?

If you’re thinking of bringing your dog on your next adventure, here are some tips to keep in mind to ensure it’s a positive experience for you, your pet and your fellow campers. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Keep your dog on a leash of less than two metres at all times.
  • Pick up and dispose of your dog’s waste in the garbage.
  • Keep your dog from chasing/harassing wildlife.
  • Use designated “dog beaches” only for swimming.
  • If your dog is a “barker,” avoid the stress and consider not bringing Fido on this trip.
  • If bugs are bothering your dog, consult with your veterinarian about the best bug repellent option for your pet.
  • Be sure to check park regulations before reserving your site as not all campgrounds allow dogs.

With these tips in mind, enjoy summer camping with your dog!

Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest winner crowned

We would like to congratulate this year’s Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest winner, Dr. Renee Ferguson and her clinic Mountain View Veterinary Hospital in Langley, BC!

The Ontario SPCA launched this contest in association with the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) and other participating SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada.

From April 24 to May 21, we asked pet owners to help us recognize veterinarians and vet clinics that go above and beyond to provide excellent care for pets in their community by submitting their vet, and voting.

The response was incredible. During the contest we received 1,960 submissions from across Canada.

We’d like to thank those who participated in this year’s contest, and congratulate all those who were nominated for this award.

This is Chef Mario. Mario looks after our barbecue every year for our fundraiser yard sale, in addition to the Cash for Critters Motorcycle Rally coming up Aug. 20. This year’s yard sale raised almost $3,200!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated and attended the sale. And thank you to Chef Mario for grilling such delicious food.
