RVT Mary and Dog

October is RVT month

The Ontario SPCA is excited to celebrate Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) all month long. RVTs are an integral part of any animal health care team, but they are particularly valuable in a shelter environment. These skilled, trained professionals offer support on how to manage the animals in our care and confidently provide their expertise in terms of medical advice and next steps.

Join us in celebrating and thanking all of our hard-working RVTs out there making a difference!

Visit our blog to learn more about RVTs and their role in animal care and shelter medicine.

Keep your pets safe this Halloween

Halloween can be a stressful time for your pets. Whether you are dressing up your furry friend or staying home handing out treats, the hubbub of activity can be exciting and a little scary.

If your pet is a little weary of strangers coming to the door, it might be best to keep them in an enclosed room or crate. Pet costumes should also fit appropriately and have no small bits to chew. Most importantly, candy and chocolate can be fatal if ingested. Please ensure treats are kept safely away from your pets.

Keep your pets safe this Halloween by visiting our blog for more great tips.

Sudbury rats  Magic Show
Rescued rats get a second chance

Bananas and Pajamas are two domestic rats that arrived in the care of the Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Animal Centre after a concerned member of the community was out walking her dog and discovered them taking shelter under her shed.

Both these poor rats were covered in open sores and it was apparent they were in discomfort. A health examination determined they had been infested with bot fly larvae. The veterinarian was successful in removing all the larvae and administered medication to heal their sores.

Bananas and Pajamas have recovered nicely. Bananas has since been adopted but Pajamas is still looking for her forever home. Help spread the word or stop by the animal centre to adopt this fun girl.
Renowned illusionist coming to Sudbury

Join us on November 4th, 2017 for the great magician and illusionist Danny Zzzz! Recognized across North America as one of the leading hypnotists of his generation, Danny Zzzz has performed on stages across the U.S. and Canada, with multiple TV appearances including a 2011 appearance on The Dragon’s Den.

A typical night with Danny Zzzz involves a great deal of audience participation, as Danny works his comedy magic with the help of a cast of hypnotized audience members whose antics set the stage for non-stop hilarity. It’s a fun filled night of comedy, mentalism and hypnosis you won’t want to miss!

Lee Duguid from Sudbury  Name the Foal winner

Top fundraiser goes to…

The Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Animal Centre would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Lee Duguid for her support of the Ontario SPCA Friends for Life! Walk™. Lee has been supporting the walk in Sudbury since 1993.

“I saw an ad in the local newspaper that said if you raise $75, you got a t-shirt and well, I really wanted that t-shirt,” recalls Lee.

That year, Lee raised $610. Fast forward 24 years and she is still an active walk participant and a huge supporter of the animals in our community. Lee has been top fundraiser in the province for the last nine years, raising over $79,000, and this year alone, collected an incredible amount of $8,693.90.

We can’t thank Lee enough for her continued support!  Thank you for your commitment to the animals!

Our foal has a name

Thank you to everyone who entered the Name the Foal contest last month. With nearly 500 entries, we received many fantastic suggestions and the judges had a difficult time selecting a winner. After much deliberation, we are please to announce the winner of the contest and recipient of the Green Hawk $100 gift card and prize pack.

Congratulations to Marj Burnette of Gravenhurst for naming our sweet foal Quin (Algonquin). We hope you enjoy your prize!
