October is RVT month

The Ontario SPCA is excited to celebrate Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) all month long. RVTs are an integral part of any animal health care team, but they are particularly valuable in a shelter environment. These skilled, trained professionals offer support on how to manage the animals in our care and confidently provide their expertise in terms of medical advice and next steps.

Join us in celebrating and thanking all of our hard-working RVTs out there making a difference!

Keep your pets safe this Halloween

Halloween can be a stressful time for your pets. Whether you are dressing up your furry friend or staying home handing out treats, the hubbub of activity can be exciting and a little scary.

If your pet is a little weary of strangers coming to the door, it might be best to keep them in an enclosed room or crate. Pet costumes should also fit appropriately and have no small bits to chew. Most importantly, candy and chocolate can be fatal if ingested. Please ensure treats are kept safely away from your pets.

Keep your pets safe this Halloween by visiting our blog for more great tips.

Joey from SDG Madi from SDG
A happy ending for Joey

Our sweet little Joey arrived at the Ontario SPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Animal Centre after he was found scared and alone. Joey had a terrible case of ear mites which was immediately treated. Unfortunately, Joey was also suffering from a severe inner ear infection causing him tremendous pain.

After weeks of care at the animal centre, Joey recovered and finally the day arrived where he was ready for adoption. His wait was finally over when his new owner Terry came in, met him and adopted him. Joey is now enjoying his time with his new owner in his forever home.
Student gains hands-on experience

Meet Madi…the latest student from St. Lawrence College’s Veterinary Assistant program to complete her co-op hours at the Ontario SCPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Animal Centre. Madi came to us from the Kingston campus to gain valuable hands-on experience with the animals by assisting with health checks and other tasks within the shelter environment.

Students are always a great asset to the team. In fact, Stephanie (pictured on the left) along with three other staff members were once placement students who completed their training with the animal centre.

We wish Madi the very best in her animal care future!

NuMed Donations  Name the Foal winner

Local business supports the animals

A big thank you to the employees at NuMed in Cornwall for raising funds for the Ontario SPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Animal Centre! The company’s owner Allen, along with his employee Tanya, presented us with a cheque for $1,500 in support of the animals.

They also brought along some supplies from the animal centre’s wish list that they collected from their coworkers. Allen wanted to come in person to see the animals and how their donations will help.  We can’t thank you enough for your support!

Our foal has a name

Thank you to everyone who entered the Name the Foal contest last month. With nearly 500 entries, we received many fantastic suggestions and the judges had a difficult time selecting a winner. After much deliberation, we are please to announce the winner of the contest and recipient of the Green Hawk $100 gift card and prize pack.

Congratulations to Marj Burnette of Gravenhurst for naming our sweet foal Quin (Algonquin). We hope you enjoy your prize!
