Peac Walk

Friends for Life! Walk™ a great success

Our annual Friends for Life! Walk™ in support of animal welfare took place on September 24th at the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre. It was one of the hottest days of the year but that didn’t deter close to 250 participants from attending. Pets kept cool in the doggie pools and the misting tent was a big hit for all. The event featured some amazing dog agility demonstrations and participants were able to get a behind the scene look of the animal centre.

Thanks to NewRoads Automotive Group for being a “Big Bark” Sponsor for the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre’s Friends for Life! Walk™. With their significant contribution, NewRoads Automotive Group is instrumental in supporting animal welfare in the GTA. These funds will go directly toward surgeries, medications, adoptions, animal transfers and emergency treatment at the Ontario SPCA. Without amazing partners like this, we wouldn’t be able to help as many animals in need. A huge “Big Bark” thank you to our friends at NewRoads Automotive Group!

Thanks to all of our marketplace vendors, community partners, staff and volunteers who made this event a tremendous success. Hope to see you again next year!

RVT Mary and Dog

Halloween costume

October is RVT month

The Ontario SPCA is excited to celebrate Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) all month long. RVTs are an integral part of any animal health care team, but they are particularly valuable in a shelter environment. These skilled, trained professionals offer support on how to manage the animals in our care and confidently provide their expertise in terms of medical advice and next steps.

Join us in celebrating and thanking all of our hard-working RVTs out there making a difference!

Visit our blog to learn more about RVTs and their role in animal care and shelter medicine.

Keep your pets safe this Halloween

Halloween can be a stressful time for your pets. Whether you are dressing up your furry friend or staying home handing out treats, the hubbub of activity can be exciting and a little scary.

If your pet is a little weary of strangers coming to the door, it might be best to keep them in an enclosed room or crate. Pet costumes should also fit appropriately and have no small bits to chew. Most importantly, candy and chocolate can be fatal if ingested. Please ensure treats are kept safely away from your pets.

Keep your pets safe this Halloween by visiting our blog for more great tips.

Treats from HanStone Quartz

What a great way to spend a Friday afternoon! Last month, Jennifer Donati, Director of Sales for HanStone Quartz, showed up with at the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre with a truck full of delicious treats for everyone.

As part of their mandate to give back to the community through their “Do Good Fridays”, they selected our centre as the recipient of this kind gesture and staff were offered an array of delectable treats from coffee, donuts, ice cream and other snacks.

The HanStone Quartz employees in attendance were animal lovers so we provided a “behind the scenes” tour as a thank you for their sweet offerings. Thanks to HanStone Quartz for providing an awesome experience for the staff and volunteers at the Provincial Education & Animal Centre!
Home Depot helps

Exercise and outdoor play is important for the animals in the care of the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre. When the time came to get new sun shades for the outdoor dog runs, The Home Depot was there to give a helping hand. Thanks to e-commerce head office team, a partnership was formed and 16 sun shades were donated to the center. In addition, the local Aurora store donated the use of an excavating machine to assist with much needed gravel distribution.

Then came the big day! A team of over 20 employees from The Home Depot’s head office arrived and volunteered their time to install the sun shades and spread some much needed gravel on our back path to make it safe for dog walking.

Thanks to The Home Depot for being a solid community partner at both the local Aurora store and at head office – much appreciated!

Finding homes for the holidays

The Ontario SPCA is gearing up to find homes for as many animals as possible during “iAdopt for the Holidays”. From November 1st to December 31st, SPCAs, Humane Societies, rescue groups and animal welfare groups across Canada will be encouraging people to choose pet adoption as their first option when bringing home a new family member.

Watch for the campaign launch on November 1st and stay tuned for exciting contests, adoption stories, photos and more during iAdopt for the Holidays.

Our foal has a name

Thank you to everyone who entered the Name the Foal contest last month. With nearly 500 entries, we received many fantastic suggestions and the judges had a difficult time selecting a winner. After much deliberation, we are please to announce the winner of the contest and recipient of the Green Hawk $100 gift card and prize pack.

Congratulations to Marj Burnette of Gravenhurst for naming our sweet foal Quin (Algonquin). We hope you enjoy your prize!
