The benefits of pets on mental health

At the Ontario SPCA, we are fortunate to be working to save animals and have pets as part of out daily lives. Pets not only help increase productivity, but they can also have a positive impact on your mental health.

As conversations about mental health continue to be encouraged, we wanted to share some resources about the benefits of pets on a variety of mental health disorders including depression, autism, anxiety, and more.

Read our recent blog Benefits of pets for our mental health to learn more on how pets can enrich your life.

Cupcake Day helps animals in need

2017 saw many successes for the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre, including assisting over 1160 animals who came through our doors. As a not-for-profit organization, we rely on the generosity and support of the community to continue to provide the services we do for the animals. One of our largest fundraisers of the year is National Cupcake Day™ which takes place on any desired day throughout the months of January and February, culminating on Monday, Feb. 26 – the sweetest day of the year. In 2017, we raised over $13,500 for injured, abused and abandoned animals. Those dollars stayed right here at the Provincial Education & Animal Centre in Stouffville to help animals locally.

We invite you to join us in raising critically needed funds for animals. You can register for free at nationalcupcakeday.ca and select Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre (PEAC,Stouffville) to support the animals we care for every day!

This year, our Cupcake Day Party Extraordinaire is happening at Newmarket PetSmart – and YOU are invited! Join us from 11:00am – 2:00pm on Sat., Feb. 24th, 2018 and visit our Cupcake Day booth – we will be located right inside the PetSmart store at 18126 Yonge Street withlots of delicious cupcakes to choose from!
Adopt-it-forward to save a life

Veronica adopted a black poly-dactyl cat named Gaby (pictured above), now known as Lilo, back in June of 2016 when she came into our care as a stray cat. Last December, Veronica wanted to help other cats and decided to “adopt-it-forward” by paying the adoption fees for two special black cats Debbie Scragglepuss and Charles Nopants, who were missing hair due to poor living conditions prior to their arrival. She wanted to help these two in particular – despite their initial different appearance, they were super confident with playful and affectionate personalities.

Debbie Scragglepuss was first to go home and her adopter paid the adoption fee forward for another black cat named Luanne Regulafur. A lovely family then adopted Luanne and Charles together since their adoption fees had already been paid!

It was the purrfect fit for these two felines! Luanne and Charles made the best of friends with the family right away. We are so thankful for Veronica’s generosity as she helped these two cats get their second chance at happiness.

Urgently Needed: Person with skills to cut holes in stainless steel cages

Do you have experience cutting stainless steel? Are you interested in improving the lives of the cats here at the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre by creating a more enriching space? If you answered, “YES!” to these questions, we need your help!

The cats in our care need larger cages, which we’re expanding through the installation of portals. Better housing means less illness, increased comfort and friendlier cats. Happy cats are more appealing to adopters. This increases the number of animals that find loving homes.

By making some modifications to their living area, the cats in our care will be able to relax in comfort, stretch out, play and use their litter box without the risk of soiling their food or water. Help us improve the lives of our resident cats as they await adoption.

 Cat Curtains  Nail Trims

Thank you East Gwillimbury Library!

The cats in our care are enjoying a little more privacy thanks to students from the Learn to Sew workshop hosted by the East Gwillimbury Public Library in Mount Albert. The young crafters created and donated privacy curtains that are used at Animal Centres across the province to help alleviate stress levels in cats when they first come into a shelter environment.

Cats are susceptible to anxiety which can sometimes lead to illness. The privacy curtains are placed in their enclosures to give them a little security during their transition.

We can’t thank our friends enough at the East Gwillimbury Library for their support. If you are over the age of 12 and would like to get involved in the Learn to Sew workshop, please contact the library at (905) 473-2472 or email info@egpl.ca.

Vaccines: Is your pet protected?

It’s important to have your pet vaccinated, but did you know that not all pets need to be vaccinated for every disease? As a responsible pet owner, it’s important to discuss with your veterinarian what they recommend for your pet.

In the meantime, read our blog PET HEALTH CORNER: What vaccinations does your pet need to learn about core vaccinations which are considered vital to the majority of pets because of the risk of exposure, severity of disease or transmissibility to humans.
