The benefits of pets on mental health

At the Ontario SPCA, we are fortunate to be working to save animals and have pets as part of out daily lives. Pets not only help increase productivity, but they can also have a positive impact on your mental health.

As conversations about mental health continue to be encouraged, we wanted to share some resources about the benefits of pets on a variety of mental health disorders including depression, autism, anxiety, and more.

Read our recent blog Benefits of pets for our mental health to learn more on how pets can enrich your life.

Bones and Booth   Roo the Cupcake Mascott
Bones and Booth find happiness together

We love happy endings and this one sure is! A loveable pair of cats, Booth and Bones, came into the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre as an owner surrender by someone who loved them very much but could no longer care for them.

Bones was very shy at first but Booth became friends with everyone the second he entered the Animal Centre. Booth was a very heavy boy weighing in at a whopping 12kg! This hefty guy needed to be placed on a wellness regime and staff managed to find a diet that worked for him. Both Booth and Bones loved attention and a nice brush, though Booth often worked his way onto your lap to get in a good cuddle.

We were so happy when they got adopted together. They are now cuddling up with their new forever family on a nice comfortable couch and we couldn’t be more thrilled.
It’s the sweetest day of the year

National Cupcake Day™ is one of our favorite fundraising events here at the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre and you can get in on the fun! Join us on February 18th from 1pm to 4pm at our Cupcake Day Party & Open House! There will be fun for the entire family including face painting and a Smooch Booth.

You can also hold your own cupcake day party by registering online at nationalcupcakeday.ca. All proceeds raised helps animals in our community!

We speak for ourselves and all of our furry friends when we say how much we appreciate all those who take part in this event.

Recycling helps the environment and the animals

Supporting the animals at the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre is easier than you think! By collecting empty beer cans and alcohol bottles, you can help raise much needed funds for food, supplies and more.

Each week staff and volunteers take the time to sort through the collected donations, and the monies raised help cover vet care, food and enrichment for all the animals in our care.

Our recycling program continues to grown thanks to everyone who participates in our bottle drive! Not only are you helping the environment, but you are helping animals in need too.

Vaccines: Is your pet protected?

It’s important to have your pet vaccinated, but did you know that not all pets need to be vaccinated for every disease? As a responsible pet owner, it’s important to discuss with your veterinarian what they recommend for your pet.

In the meantime, read our blog PET HEALTH CORNER: What vaccinations does your pet need to learn about core vaccinations which are considered vital to the majority of pets because of the risk of exposure, severity of disease or transmissibility to humans.
