May 2018
This year, we took on spring with a new approach... by jumping into the St. Lawrence River as part of our annual Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser. Although the air temperature was about 20 degrees warmer than on our traditional New Year’s date, the water was only 4◦C! Thanks to everyone who took the plunge and donated towards the animals in our community.

Northern dogs ready to find new homes
Another group of Northern dogs has been successfully transferred to find loving homes and they’re now starting to become available for adoption at various locations across the province.
On April 27, a group of 21 dogs touched down in Thunder Bay on a journey to Central Ontario. The dogs were flown into Thunder Bay by North Star Air Ltd. where they were cared for by volunteers before embarking on the next phase of their journey.

ASPCA releases top 10 toxins of 2017
Every year, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) compiles data based on cases of potential poisonings. The list is a great benchmark identifying hazardous trends that could be fatal to our furry companions.
For the second year in a row, human prescription medications topped the list, barely surpassing over- the- counter medication and supplements.
Many common household items can be extremely toxic if ingested by pets. Read the ASPCA’s list of Top 10 Animal Toxins of 2017 to learn more and prevent your pet from being a statistic.

Hitting the road for animal welfare
Peter joined the volunteer team at the Ontario SPCA Leeds & Grenville Animal Centre in 2017, helping care for cats. When the opportunity to help with Northern Dog transfers came up, Peter jumped at the opportunity. Peter was one of the key drivers in a recent transfer, driving from Thunder Bay to Southern Ontario, ensuring all the animals safely arrived at their destination.
Thank you Peter for your dedication to animal welfare.
We are always looking for volunteers to assist in our Animal Transfer Program. Please click here if you are interested in participating in these unique volunteer assignments.

Pet of the Week - Skye
Meet Skye, a one-year-old domestic shorthair cat waiting to meet her purrfect match. Skye was surrendered to the Ontario SPCA Leeds & Grenville Animal Centre along with her brother Bing who has since been adopted.
In the Meet Your Match™ program, Skye is considered a Purple – Secret Admirer. While she likes to keep an eye on things from a distance, Skye does like to come around for cuddles when it suits her mood. Skye would also prefer a home where she is the only cat.
Drop by Pet Valu in Brockville to meet this beautiful girl.

Community group gives back
We would like to give a special shout out to the Employment + Education Centre. A group of wonderful people from the Centre decided they wanted to give back to the community by helping the animals in our care. They put their heads together and came up with the great idea to make blankets for the dog kennels.
What talent! Not only were the blankets beautiful, but functional as well and the dogs absolutely love them.
On behalf of our canine friends, thank you for your generous donation. |
