No Excuses...No Hot Pets

I left the window down for him” “I wasn’t going to be gone long” We’ve heard it all!

Leaving pets unattended in vehicles during the hot summer months, putting animals’ safety at risk and even causing death, is an ongoing problem across Ontario.

Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures – even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows slightly open. Dogs have a limited ability to sweat and a short time in a hot environment can be life-threatening.

There is NO excuse for leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle and this summer we need your help to share this important message!

Join us on June 21st by visiting nohotpets.ca for the official launch of our 2018 No Hot Pets campaign and help spread the word.

Shawn and Kal Ruby
Police officer shares powerful story of battle with mental illness, PTSD and his service dog Kal

Shawn Fougere is a police officer living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In early June, he spoke at the Ontario SPCA’s 2018 Educational Conference about how his service dog Kal has changed his life.

In our latest YouTube video, Shawn shares his emotional story of pain, recovery, and choosing to speak out.“I wasn’t some weak cop who couldn’t handle my job, all of a sudden I realized I was a human being,” Shawn says, “And once I realized that, that’s when I began my recovery.”

You won’t want to miss his compelling story of living with PTSD and the effects it had on his family.
A special gem finds a home

The North Bay Humane Society contacted the Ontario SPCA with a request for help for a very special dog named Ruby. This senior girl came in as a stray with an eye condition that would require ongoing care and medication. Ruby needed a special home with someone who could provide her with the care she required.

Along came Zara, who after seeing her picture online and learning of her special requirements, drove four hours to Cornwall to meet her. It was meant to be! Ruby is now happily living in her new condo and settling in nicely.

Kinettes

Wilson

Animals benefit from Kinettes donation

With over 75 years of work in the community, the Cornwall Kinettes are an exceptional organization dedicated to making Cornwall a better place for everyone. This year, the Ontario SPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Animal Centre is pleased to be the recipient of a $500 donation from the Cornwall Kinettes. Their generous donation will help many animals while they wait to find their forever home.

From all the staff, volunteers and animals at the SD&G Animal Centre, we thank the Kinettes for their support and all the work they do in the community.

There’s no cat quite like Wilson

We see a lot of cats at the Ontario SPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Animal Centre, but Wilson…he was definitely one of a kind. Not only was he distinctively unique in appearance (he is one handsome guy), but he had the personality to match. Wilson was an adventure seeker and escaped every chance he could. On many occasions, we would find him sitting in the office, taking over the desk and meowing orders.

Wilson was very entertaining and everyone loved him. Although we were sad to see him go, we were thrilled that Wilson found his furever home during a pet adoption weekend at the local Pet Valu.

Got a Pet Contest Winner

And the winner is…

We would like to congratulate this year’s Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest winner, Dr. Renee Ferguson and her clinic Mountain View Veterinary Hospital in Langley, BC!

The Ontario SPCA launched this contest in association with the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) and other participating SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada.

From April 23 to May 18, we asked pet owners to help us recognize veterinarians and vet clinics that go above and beyond to provide excellent care for pets in their community by submitting their vet, and voting.

The response was incredible. During the contest we received over 2,800 submissions from across Canada.

We’d like to thank those who participated in this year’s contest, and congratulate all those who were nominated for this award.
