No Excuses...No Hot Pets

I left the window down for him” “I wasn’t going to be gone long” We’ve heard it all!

Leaving pets unattended in vehicles during the hot summer months, putting animals’ safety at risk and even causing death, is an ongoing problem across Ontario.

Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures – even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows slightly open. Dogs have a limited ability to sweat and a short time in a hot environment can be life-threatening.

There is NO excuse for leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle and this summer we need your help to share this important message!

Join us on June 21st by visiting nohotpets.ca for the official launch of our 2018 No Hot Pets campaign and help spread the word.

Shawn and Kal Katherine
Police officer shares powerful story of battle with mental illness, PTSD and his service dog Kal

Shawn Fougere is a police officer living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In early June, he spoke at the Ontario SPCA’s 2018 Educational Conference about how his service dog Kal has changed his life.

In our latest YouTube video, Shawn shares his emotional story of pain, recovery, and choosing to speak out.“I wasn’t some weak cop who couldn’t handle my job, all of a sudden I realized I was a human being,” Shawn says, “And once I realized that, that’s when I began my recovery.”

You won’t want to miss his compelling story of living with PTSD and the effects it had on his family.
A home worth waiting for

We love happy endings! We have so many reasons to be thankful for what we do each and everyday and Katherine gave us one more reason to smile.

Katherine originally came in as a stray and had been patiently waiting to find a place to call home for many long months. This sweet cat’s life changed when Edie came by the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre and met the beautiful Katherine. It was love at first sight!

We are thrilled that Katherine is off to new beginnings and we wish her and her new mum all the best.

Donna

Orillia Golf Tournament

Heroes aren’t just in movies

We would like to acknowledge a real-life superhero volunteering right here at the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre!

Donna helps us plan and organize fundraising events, drives animals to veterinary appointments, organizes our bottle drive and helps us enrich the lives of all animals in our care.

We are truly lucky to have Donna and want her to know that we appreciate everything she does. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization and we wouldn’t be as successful without them.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our animals – and our staff – each and every day.

Got a Pet Contest Winner

And the winner is…

We would like to congratulate this year’s Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™ contest winner, Dr. Renee Ferguson and her clinic Mountain View Veterinary Hospital in Langley, BC!

The Ontario SPCA launched this contest in association with the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) and other participating SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada.

From April 23 to May 18, we asked pet owners to help us recognize veterinarians and vet clinics that go above and beyond to provide excellent care for pets in their community by submitting their vet, and voting.

The response was incredible. During the contest we received over 2,800 submissions from across Canada.

We’d like to thank those who participated in this year’s contest, and congratulate all those who were nominated for this award.
