Know the signs of heatstroke

Spending an afternoon in the garden or a day on the trails? When it’s hot outside, even the most responsible pet owners might be at risk of their pet experiencing heatstroke. Increased heart rate, excessive panting or drooling and listlessness are some of the signs that your pet might be in danger. Keep your pets safe by learning the signs and what to do if your pet suffers from heatstroke.

Boating with pets – safety tips

There’s nothing better than getting out on the lake on a hot summer day. Wind in your hair, splashing water cooling you down, and your furry companion by your side. Boating can be a lot of fun! But it’s important to practice safe boating, especially when there are pets involved.

If you plan on bringing your pets along for the adventure, read our blog Pets and boats: Boating safety tips. We hope these tips help you and your dog have a safe and fun-filled summer boating and swimming!

Missing cat reunited with family after being lost for years

Ryder, a beautiful black cat found his way to the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre after being homeless and alone. He was in pretty rough shape and had some obvious battle scars, likely from trying to survive out on the streets. With some TLC and vet care, this cheeky fellow was moved to the adoption floor and soon became a star on our Facebook page.

We were thrilled to learn that a visitor to our centre had seen Ryder on Facebook and recognized him right away! Ryder was the cat that had been missing from their lives for almost four years! He had wandered off after the family moved to a new area. How exciting that Ryder was reunited with his family after all these years!

Scrub-a-dub-dub, there’s a pet in the tub

There are a lot of clean pets walking around Renfrew County thanks to our volunteers from the Petawawa Legion. A wonderful group of individuals dedicated their time to raise money for the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre by holding a dog wash and barbecue.

Over 62 pets showed up for some pampering. And the best part was that $1,700 was raised in four hours! Thank you for our incredible volunteers, the Petawawa Legion and everyone who came to support the animals.

Summer camp unleashes the animal lover

It’s been an exciting summer for many kids in our community! Our recent Unleashed Summer Camp hosted 12 enthusiastic animal loving campers for a whole week of adventure. What an awesome op-purr-tunity to help foster our future leaders in animal welfare.

Our junior animal advocates lived each camp day to its fullest, surrounded by animals and learning through hands-on experience. Our day trips included a day-in-the-life at Pembroke Animal Hospital and horsing around at Canyon Creek Farm! Unleashed and loving it!
