New Healthy Pets program creates more access to veterinary care
The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society recently teamed up with Healthy Pets, to provide our pet foster parents, across the province, with veterinarians online when after-hour medical attention is needed.
Healthy Pets is Canada’s first solution for text and video-based medicine in veterinary care, simplifying access to pet care through a convenient, on-demand and affordable tool.
Emma Harris, founder and CEO of Healthy Pets, spoke to us about online veterinary care on our podcast – the benefits, the restrictions, and how Healthy Pets is making a difference.

February is Pet Dental Health Month!
Oral care is an important part of maintaining the overall health of your dog or cat. Bacteria and plaque can harden on your pet’s teeth to form tartar, which can result in gingivitis, receding gums, pain and tooth loss. Dental problems not only affect your pet’s teeth; if left untreated dental infections can spread to the heart, kidneys and other vital organs.
Read our top five tips to keep your pet’s smile sparkling and clean all year round.

Common reasons why cats “Meow”
Though some cats are more vocal than others, most pet owners will have experience conversing with their feline friends. But why do they do it? Are they looking for attention or asking to be fed? Perhaps they are greeting people or even yowling to find a mate.
If you ever wondered what your cat is trying to say, check out this blog post with great tips from our friends at the ASPCA.

Honda Canada sells swag to support local animals
The spirit of giving back to those in need starts at the core and Honda Canada truly has a charitable core of employees.
For the second year in a row, Honda Canada organized a swag sale for their employees, asking them to donate items they may have, but no longer want. Merchandise included everything from coffee mugs and hockey sticks, to sports memorabilia and suit cases. In total, Honda Canada employees raised $6,600 to help the animals at the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre.
The giving spirit doesn’t stop there! On several occasions, employees also dedicated their time by coming into the animal centre and building shelters for feral cats, and helped organize donations for animals in underserviced areas in Northern Ontario.
Thank you Honda Canada for being such wonderful and caring supporters! |
Hot Chocolate Café for National Cupcake Day™
A special shout-out goes to Charleene and her grade-one class at Denne Public School for thinking outside the cupcake liner and raising funds for National Cupcake Day™ by organizing a Hot Chocolate Café.
Throughout December, students, with the help of the teachers, sold hot chocolate to their peers at recess. They even created posters and rehearsed announcements to help promote their sweet fundraiser.
Ms. Cordiner’s class wrapped up their fundraiser with a field trip to the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre, where they went on a behind-the-scenes tour, built cat shelters and had the opportunity to meet some animals in our care.
No gesture is sweeter than helping our friends in need! Thank you to all the students at Denne Public School.
