New wellness clinic helps animals without access to routine vet care
Did you know the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society has launched a new community support service for families without the means to take their animal to a local veterinarian for routine care?
Located within the Ontario SPCA Centre Veterinary Hospital in Stouffville, the new wellness clinic provides non-emergency care to animals who do not currently receive veterinary care. This new wellness clinic will be accessible to families who have been referred through local social services and do not currently have a relationship with a veterinarian.
The clinic provides general wellness examinations, vaccinations and, when necessary and requested by the family, euthanasia services. If the animal requires any additional care, the family will be referred to a local veterinarian for additional treatment. Note: this clinic does not have the capacity to treat ill animals or emergency situations.
We want to keep animals with the families who love them. By working with local social services, we want to reach those who may be struggling to provide routine care to their furry family members.

Lola celebrates her one-year adopt-iversary
We love happy adoption tails! We recently received a pupdate on Lola, who was officially adopted in May last year. Her family wanted to share a one-year adoption update with us!
“Lola is a very happy little dog who is easy going, loves everyone and has taken well to this adventurous family. It took her some time to come out of her shell and bond with our other dog, but well worth the wait. From long walks to backcountry canoe trips, or just relaxing fireside, she’s an absolute pleasure to have as a member of our little family,” Lola’s adopter reports.
“Thanks for allowing us to give her a home. I’ve included a few of our favourite photos of this special little girl who always makes us smile."

Merlin is living his best retirement life
Merlin's fur parent sadly passed away unexpectedly, and he found himself in search of a new home at 10 years of age. We knew the perfect home was out there and it didn’t take long for Merlin to find a loving home to retire.
"Merlin is doing so well! He has adjusted really well and is loved by everyone he has met. He is definitely a favourite around here,” his adopter reports. “He’s also been so good with the cat. She’s slowly warming up to him and I have a feeling they’ll be great friends soon enough. He’s a big cuddler, loves to take up most of the bed and is very spoiled! His basketball toy is his new favourite thing; he brings it everywhere. Thanks again, he’s a perfect fit."

Are you prepared for an emergency?
If an emergency struck, would you be ready? May is Emergency Preparedness Month and from May 1-13, the Ontario SPCA and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs are spreading the important message of having an emergency plan for your family – including your animals.
Visit our Emergency Preparedness page for a list of items to include in your pet`s emergency survival kit, as well as resources on how to develop an emergency preparedness plan and escape plan.
By having the necessary supplies to shelter in place, and a plan to evacuate with your pets, you’ll be prepared for the unexpected and will help ensure you’re able to care for your family and pets during an emergency.

Meet our VIPs available for adoption
Have you met the Ontario SPCA’s VIPs? If you visit our adoption site, you may notice animals with the VIP logo. This stands for Very Important Paws, and these are animals in our care who may need a little extra help. These furry friends are often located at our Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre in Peterborough, which is now operational.
Animals with a VIP designation could include a puppy who needs help learning new behaviours and getting acquainted with the world around them, an adolescent dog going through the terrible teens, or an adult buddy who may be unsure of new and difficult changes in their lives.
Feline friends are also a part of the program, as animal centre settings can be a difficult adjustment for cats.
When adopting a VIP animal, our animal centre staff will offer a more individualized care plan, including information sheets and a training and enrichment plan that has been implemented and proven successful. Our goal is to empower new adopters to set their buddies up for a long, happy life.
Meet our VIPs available for adoption, and stay tuned for more information on the official grand opening of the Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre.
