January 2015Welcome to NewsHound!
Winter is here! With temperatures dropping across the province, remembering to keep all our family members, two-legged and four-legged, safe and warm during the winter season is crucial. Check out some great resources on the Ontario SPCA Blog to help protect your pets.
It might be cold outside, but you can keep warm in the kitchen by baking cupcakes for National Cupcake Day™ for SPCAs and Humane Societies! Learn more at nationalcupcakeday.ca.

“Gizmo” is Welcomed with Open Arms
All of our shelter pets are very dear to us, and we are always excited to hear from their new owners for an update. We were recently contacted by the Schepanowski family who adopted “Gizmo”, an energetic little Dachshund who needed a home.
They had a full household of pets including two dogs and four cats, but were ready to welcome one more pet into their family. Jodi, her husband, and their three daughters all agreed Gizmo was the one after seeing him on our site, and proceeded to fill out the adoption form and Meet Your Match® survey. It was a match! “The good feeling I have being able to give a dog (or cat) a second chance at a loving home is one that will never go away,” writes Jodi.

Not a Fish Tale: David Swims 40km to Fundraise
Local resident David Merpaw was very serious when he announced his plans to swim 40 kilometres to raise funds for the Ontario SPCA Stormont Dundas & Glengarry Branch and another local charity. As a regular swimmer at the Nav Centre, a professional centre with one of the largest fitness and recreation facilities in Eastern Ontario, David is a swim marathoner who also volunteered to coordinate this swim fundraiser which raised $500! He really demonstrated that there are many creative ways to raise money while having fun.
Thank you David for your incredible accomplishment and donation to our shelter.

Scotiabank Donates $4,000
Alexandria Scotiabank Branch staff members volunteered their time during “Posing for Paws,” a charity fashion show and auction in support of the Ontario SPCA Stormont Dundas & Glengarry Branch this past October.
The event boasted a fashion show, a silent auction with over 100 items, live music and more. The Scotiabank Branch generously fund matched and presented our shelter with a $4,000 cheque! This donation has helped us to continue to provide the best of care to our shelter animals, along with food, medical attention and supplies.
Thank to the Alexandria Scotiabank team for your generous contribution.

iAdopt for the Holidays a Big Success
iAdopt for the Holidays ran from November 1st to December 31st, 2014 across the country with the goal of getting as many animals adopted into loving new homes as possible over the holiday season.
With 42 participating partners working together, a total of 3,774 animals were adopted over the campaign period. The Ontario SPCA itself made up 1,396 of those adoptions!
We want to thank everyone that took part in the campaign. You helped to change the lives of thousands of animals in need.

Winter Care for Paws
Winter is harsh! Harsh on us humans, and harsh on our pets as well. They might have a beautiful fur coat to help protect them from some of that cold air, but like us, our furry friends require added care for their skin and paws. Ice-melting chemicals can also be harmful if left on the skin or ingested.
Read our blog post Winter Care For Your Dog’s Paws and Skin for great tips on how you can keep your pet safe and in tip top shape all winter long.
