January
2015Welcome to NewsHound!
Winter is here! With temperatures dropping across the province, remembering to
keep all our family members, two-legged and four-legged, safe and warm during the winter season is crucial.
Check out some great resources on the Ontario SPCA Blog to help
protect your pets.
It might be cold outside, but you can keep warm in the kitchen by baking
cupcakes for National Cupcake Day™ for SPCAs and Humane Societies! Learn more at nationalcupcakeday.ca.

Just in Time for the New Year
“Mowgli” came into the Ontario SPCA Midland Branch as a stray in October. We didn't think this handsome man would be staying with us long due to the fact he was declawed and neutered. It was obvious that he was once well taken care and had previous owners.
Sadly, Mowgli was never claimed and eventually went up for adoption. We noticed Mowgli wasn't using his litter box as he should be and a trip to the vet determined he had an inflamed bladder. Mowgli will need to be on a special diet for the rest of his life to treat this condition.
Months went by and Mowgli remained at the shelter waiting for a new family. Finally, a day before New Years Eve, Don Wright came in and adopted Mowgli so they could ring the new year in together. 2015 marks the beginning of a happy life for Mowgli and Don!

Volunteer Spotlight – Meet Katelyn
Katelyn Beauchamp started volunteering with the Ontario SPCA Midland Branch in September and has been a fabulous addition to the volunteer team.
Rain, snow or sunshine, Katelyn comes in all sorts of weather to walk the dogs and make sure they get their exercise. She has also been crucial in some of our transfers over the last couple of months, often volunteering to drive animals to the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre in Newmarket.
Katelyn also fell in love with “Rosco”, one of our dogs here at the shelter and adopted him, giving him a perfect forever home.
Thank you Katelyn for everything you do.

The Holiday Spirit Lives On
The holiday spirit lives for the animals at the Ontario SPCA Midland Branch thanks to all the wonderful donations we received over the holidays.
So many generous people came in with gifts for the animals and supplies to help stock our shelves. This support is what allows us to continue providing life saving services to the animals in our community.
Donations are always welcome. Check out our WISH LIST to see how you might be able to help.

iAdopt for the Holidays a Big Success
iAdopt for the Holidays ran from November 1st to December 31st,
2014 across the country with the goal of getting as many animals adopted into loving new homes as possible
over the holiday season.
With 42 participating
partners working together, a total of 3,774 animals were adopted over the campaign period. The Ontario SPCA
itself made up 1,396 of those adoptions!
We want to
thank everyone that took part in the campaign. You helped to change the lives of thousands of animals in
need.

Winter Care for Paws
Winter is harsh!
Harsh on us humans, and harsh on our pets as well. They might have a beautiful fur coat to help protect
them from some of that cold air, but like us, our furry friends require added care for their skin and paws.
Ice-melting chemicals can also be harmful if left on the skin or ingested.
Read our blog post Winter Care For Your Dog’s Paws and Skin for great tips on how you
can keep your pet safe and in tip top shape all winter long.
