Welcome to NewsHound!

Winter is here!  With temperatures dropping across the province, remembering to keep all our family members, two-legged and four-legged, safe and warm during the winter season is crucial.  Check out some great resources on the Ontario SPCA Blog to help protect your pets.

 Betty

A Helping Paw

“Betty”, a six-month old black Lab puppy, came to the Ontario SPCA Kent County Branch as a stray after being found running down the road by a local resident. This poor little girl was terrified and cowered in her kennel.

The staff brought Betty into the front office for some extra socialization – the poor pup hid underneath a desk, scared to even come out to eat. We decided to introduce her to one of the older shelter dogs to see if a little bonding might help. The transformation was magical!   With a little mothering she began to come out of her shell, and within a few days, Betty was bounding around the office, acting like a normal puppy again.

It wasn’t long before she caught the eye of a family looking for a new furry friend. Betty is now known as Maya, and is able to play and frolic like a puppy should.

 Ken Dolson

Volunteer Spotlight – Meet Ken

Ken Dolson began volunteering with the Ontario SPCA Kent County Branch in 2012 and is one of the most dedicated dog walkers we have ever had the pleasure of having on our volunteer team.

Ken loves animals and really misses having a dog around the house. Instead of adopting, he decided he wanted to help out more dogs by taking them for walks and comes to the shelter every Saturday morning. His dedication is unwavering and he often schedules his vacations, errands, and other responsibilities around his volunteer shifts to ensure the dogs at the shelter always get out for some exercise.

Ken says he gets a great sense of peace when out for his walks and loves knowing that he’s making a difference in the dogs’ lives.

Kent Minor Bantam Cobras

A Gift Exchange for the Animals

Staff at the Ontario SPCA Kent County Branch were truly touched when a group of young boys came into the shelter baring gifts for the animals.

Following a regional hockey tournament in Chatham, the Kent Minor Bantam Cobras held a Christmas banquet. Instead of their usual gift exchange, the team decided to donate items to the Ontario SPCA Kent County Branch.  A few players delivered the goodies – food, litter, treats and toys - the following day. What a thoughtful group of boys!

We are always in need of supplies for the animals.  View our WISH LIST to see if you can help!

 iAdopt for the
Holidays

iAdopt for the Holidays a Big Success

iAdopt for the Holidays ran from November 1st to December 31st, 2014 across the country with the goal of getting as many animals adopted into loving new homes as possible over the holiday season.

With 42 participating partners working together, a total of 3,774 animals were adopted over the campaign period. The Ontario SPCA itself made up 1,396 of those adoptions!

We want to thank everyone that took part in the campaign. You helped to change the lives of thousands of animals in need.

Winter Care for Paws

Winter is harsh!   Harsh on us humans, and harsh on our pets as well.  They might have a beautiful fur coat to help protect them from some of that cold air, but like us, our furry friends require added care for their skin and paws. Ice-melting chemicals can also be harmful if left on the skin or ingested.

Read our blog post Winter Care For Your Dog’s Paws and Skin for great tips on how you can keep your pet safe and in tip top shape all winter long.
