 Shadow

A Little Love Goes a Long Way

“Shadow” was surrendered by her former owner who was moving and no longer able to care for her. She had been an outdoor dog, had lived in a kennel and was not used to interacting with people. This senior girl was in serious need of a bath, she was obese and had worn and broken teeth.

When Shadow first arrived, she was very uncomfortable with shelter life since she wasn't used to being indoors with others. She needed a foster home and Leanne, one of our experienced foster volunteers was up to the task. With the support and love of Leanne and her family, Shadow learned house training manners and was socialized with many people, pets and even farm animal. She was put on a healthy diet, lost weight, was spayed and got her teeth fixed.

Last month a family who got to know Shadow through Leanne, witnessed the wonderful family pet she had become and decided to adopted her.  We have since learned Shadow has adjusted very well and loves going for her walks with her new family. Thank you Leanne and family for helping Shadow with her transformation to start her new life, and congratulations to Shadow and her new family. May they enjoy many years together.

 Bottle donations

Volunteer Spotlight – Meet Neil

This month, we profile one of our volunteers who helps us with our very successful bottle return program. We could not manage the incredible volume of empties that are donated without Neil.

Every Saturday and Sunday, Neil arrives at the shelter to sort the bottles and cans and places them in the appropriate containers. It doesn’t matter how high the piles are or how cold it is outside, Neil diligently gets the job done and ready for the Wednesday team to count and load.  And it doesn’t matter how much work lies in front of him, if someone shows up with a new load to drop off, Neil is quick to offer his assistance and help unload.

Neil is a great ambassador for the shelter and his contribution to the bottles program is immeasurable. Without his help, it would take our Wednesday team much longer to process the containers for the Beer Store pick up.

Thank you Neil for all your hard work and dedication to helping the animals in need.

 Owen and Maggie

Kids to the Rescue

We are thrilled and touched at the Ontario SPCA Orangeville & District Branch by the number of kids wanting to help animals in need. It’s so wonderful to learn of kids who come up with creative ideas and implement campaigns to get donations and supplies for the animals at the shelter.

This month we’re saying “way to go” to two of these young animal advocates. Owen stopped in at the shelter in January with a whole lot of supplies for the animals. Owen came up with the idea, got the support from his teachers, and did a drive at his school. What a super project that benefits the animals in so many ways. Way to go Owen!

On the same day in January, Maggie also stopped by with supplies and gift cards for the animals here at the shelter. Maggie had a birthday party and she asked her guests to bring gifts for the animals rather than birthday gifts for herself. This is Maggie's third year collecting gifts to help the animals in our care. What a generous and thoughtful gesture. Awesome job Maggie!

No donation is too big or too small.  See how you can help the animals in our community.

Keep Your Dog Active This Winter

While winter dog walking can sometimes be a challenge, it’s important to meet your dog’s exercise needs all year round. Not only will this keep your dog physically active during the winter months, it’ll also provide much needed mental stimulation for your dog.

The cold weather might mean shorter walks, but there are still ways to get that physical activity in.  Read the Ontario SPCA’s blog post Tips for a Safe Dog Walk This Winter for useful information.

Dogs love walks no matter what the season brings.  Just remember, if it’s too cold for you outside …it’s too cold for your pets.

Sharing the Love This Winter

Ontario SPCA staff would like to thank all of our volunteers for their support over the winter!  Cold weather hasn't stopped them.

•  Volunteers braved the cold temperatures and provided over 300 dog walks last month to ensure all the animals were getting the exercise they needed.

•  Volunteers are also set to build 20 feral cat shelters to provide warmth for homeless cats in various communities.

•  Our transportation volunteers even tackled the icy roads to safely transport our animals to various medical appointments.

Volunteers are vital to our organization and without your warm hearts we couldn’t care for all those cold noses.  If you would like to get involved and join our volunteer team, visit ontariospca.ca and complete our online application form.
