 North and Kevin

Broken Leg, Big Spirit

“North” came to us at the Ontario SPCA Barrie Branch back in November of last year with a broken back leg. According to veterinarian exam, North’s leg had been broken for some time. When dogs come in as strays in this condition we can only imagine what they had gone through, or how this occurred. Regardless of what trauma North endured, his spirits were high and his tail was wagging. He kept us positive throughout his ordeal.

We reached out to our community supporters to help us pay for this orthopedic surgery, and you responded! North's surgery went really well and his water physiotherapy even better. He won the heart of a paramedic named Kevin who understood the importance of North's recovery. It was love at first site for both of them.

Congratulations Kevin and North, and thank you to all who helped make this possible.

 Truffles the Pig

Volunteers and Friends Help Find Home

“Truffles”, our 7 month old pot-bellied Pig, was surrendered by a resident in Barrie who recently had found out that it was against city by-law to own a pig within city limits. Sadly, this isn't uncommon.

Truffles was neutered and put up for adoption to residence outside city limits and where pigs were allowed. It took a while to find Truffles his home, but thanks to volunteers and with the help of the Ontario SPCA Midland Branch, Truffles is now enjoying hobby farm life with two other pigs!

Congratulations Truffles on finding your forever home.  A special thank you to everyone on social media who helped us get the word our and tell as many people about Truffles as we could!  It is because of you that animals like Truffles get a second chance.

Thank You Royal Canin™

Feeding the animals in our care can be quite an expensive undertaking.  The Ontario SPCA Barrie Branch would like to thank Royal Canin Canada who came on as an exclusive food provider for all Ontario SPCA Branches and facilities across the province.

Known for their commitment towards animal nutrition, Royal Canin’s contribution is a huge service to the animals in our care. We are very happy and proud to be feeding and recommending Royal Canin.

We are always in need of treats and toys.  View our WISH LIST and see how you might be able to help.

Keep Your Dog Active This Winter

While winter dog walking can sometimes be a challenge, it’s important to meet your dog’s exercise needs all year round. Not only will this keep your dog physically active during the winter months, it’ll also provide much needed mental stimulation for your dog.

The cold weather might mean shorter walks, but there are still ways to get that physical activity in.  Read the Ontario SPCA’s blog post Tips for a Safe Dog Walk This Winter for useful information.

Dogs love walks no matter what the season brings.  Just remember, if it’s too cold for you outside …it’s too cold for your pets.

Sharing the Love This Winter

Ontario SPCA staff would like to thank all of our volunteers for their support over the winter!  Cold weather hasn't stopped them.

•  Volunteers braved the cold temperatures and provided over 300 dog walks last month to ensure all the animals were getting the exercise they needed.

•  Volunteers are also set to build 20 feral cat shelters to provide warmth for homeless cats in various communities.

•  Our transportation volunteers even tackled the icy roads to safely transport our animals to various medical appointments.

Volunteers are vital to our organization and without your warm hearts we couldn’t care for all those cold noses.  If you would like to get involved and join our volunteer team, visit ontariospca.ca and complete our online application form.
