Fix Your Pet

It's officially spring this week and pets everywhere will finally be able to enjoy more time outdoors.  However, more pets outside can lead to more opportunities for pet reproduction, and in turn, litters of unwanted kittens and puppies.

Pet overpopulation is already at crisis levels in Ontario!  The Ontario SPCA urges you to spay or neuter your pet and beat the spring heat. Learn more at fixyourpet.ca.

 Flipper the Cat

iAdopt:  Flipper’s Story

My family adopted Flipper when I was seven. My mom and I went to our local Ontario SPCA Branch and looked at all the cats and kittens for an hour. The volunteer put three cats on the floor. The first two ran off and played with each other and the third one, Flipper, stayed in the corner. She was a very plump cat, was five years old at the time, was quite shy, and was PERFECT. So we put her in a cat carrier and took her home.

Mom was worried she wouldn't fit in. Finally, we took her inside and opened the carrier, and she inspected everything. She went around the kitchen, into the living room where my dad was sleeping on the couch, and upstairs. Finally, she came hopping downstairs, jumped on my dad (and subsequently woke him up) and purred softly. She was home.

Because shelter animals need love too, I Adopt.

 Kada Outside

Spring Safety

Snow will likely be on the ground for a while yet, but spring thaw is just around the corner (we hope).  This is the time of year where it’s important to keep your pets safe around rivers, streams and other bodies of water.

And while you might be tempted to open those windows and get some air circulating through the house, it's important to make sure your screens are secured first.  Pets might be just as eager to get fresh air, and loose screens can result in pets escaping or even serious injury if they were to fall out the window.

We are all looking forward to getting outside and enjoy some warmer weather.  Keep your pets safe by brushing up some great Spring Safety tips.

 Blakely Cupcake Day Party

Cupcakes, Cupcakes and More Cupcakes

Waistbands might be a little tighter after National Cupcake Day™ for SPCAs and Humane Societies, but so many animals’ lives will be saved thanks to everyone who participated.  February 23rd was truly the sweetest day of the year and the Ontario SPCA thanks everyone who took part in the many Cupcake Day parties held across the province.

Whether you baked, ate or raised funds, you have made a difference in the lives of abandoned, injured and homeless animals.   Donations are still coming in but we promise to let you know how much you helped raised as soon as the final numbers have been tallied.

Stay tuned and if you haven’t done so already, please submit your donations today.

Thank you for “baking” a difference for the animals we love!

 Fix Your Pet

March is Fix Your Pet Month!

Spaying and neutering your pet is such an important measure to help address pet overpopulation that the Ontario SPCA has dedicated the entire month of March to Fix Your Pet

Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up homeless on the street or orphaned every year. Having your pet spayed or neutered will directly address this problem.  The Ontario SPCA encourages the public to fix their pets and help reduce the number of unwanted pets.

Is your pet already spayed or neutered? Consider Spaying it Forward by donating the average price of a spay/neuter procedure to help an animal in need.

Fixyourpet.ca, it's the kindest thing you can do.

ChangeTheWorld

ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge!

This spring, the Ontario SPCA will be promoting our No Hot Pets campaign with the help of students across the province thanks to a partnership with ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge. This challenge is a six-week campaign with one goal: get high school students to volunteer in their community.

Youth will be asking the public to pledge to not leave their pets in cars. This important pet safety message will allow students to gain their community hours, learn about pet safety and help save lives!

If you would like to join the youth volunteer team in your area, please go to your local Ontario SPCA website, click on the “Get Involved” tab and sign up for our Operation No Hot Pets event.
