March 2015 Welcome to NewsHound!
It's officially spring this week and pets everywhere will finally be able to enjoy more time outdoors. However, more pets outside can lead to more opportunities for pet reproduction, and in turn, litters of unwanted kittens and puppies.
Pet overpopulation is already at crisis levels in Ontario! The Ontario SPCA urges you to spay or neuter your pet and beat the spring heat. Learn more at fixyourpet.ca.

“Beaches” Gets a New Look and Home
When animals come into our care from a neglectful situation, it can often mean an unkempt appearance and lack of basic care. When “Beaches” was brought to our shelter after a removal operation, she was in need of proper nutrition and grooming.
Once she was healthy again and ready for adoption, local groomer Monet at My Diva Dog went to work.
Once Monet was finished, Beaches looked and felt like a brand new dog. She was adopted by Brittany and is loving life at her new home! Everyone here at the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Branch is thrilled at this happy ending.

Charity Bingo Friends & Family Night a Success
On February 25th, 2015, the Boardwalk Gaming Centre located in Pembroke held a special event which included a buffet, ticket giveaways and bingo to benefit the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Branch. We also shared a video which included unique insight into daily life at the shelter and how fundraising helps the animals in our care.
We want to acknowledge volunteers Amanda and Sherry Lynn who spoke with the crowd and handed out pamphlets during this fun evening. Thank you to all who participated in this fabulous fundraiser!

Microchip Clinic Coming in April
As any animal care expert will tell you, only 10% of cats are returned to their owners because they lack proper identification. Dogs are also at risk if they aren’t microchipped.
The Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Branch is holding a low cost Microchip Clinic on Saturday April 18th, 2015, at the Pembroke Animal Hospital. Pet owners can have their pet safely and quickly microchipped at the reduced rate of $20 for cats/kittens and $30 for dogs/puppies.
Space is limited. For more information or to reserve your appointment contact us at 613-588-4508.

March is Fix Your Pet Month!
Spaying and neutering your pet is such an important measure to help address pet overpopulation that the Ontario SPCA has dedicated the entire month of March to Fix Your Pet!
Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up homeless on the street or orphaned every year. Having your pet spayed or neutered will directly address this problem. The Ontario SPCA encourages the public to fix their pets and help reduce the number of unwanted pets.
Is your pet already spayed or neutered? Consider Spaying it Forward by donating the average price of a spay/neuter procedure to help an animal in need.
Fixyourpet.ca, it's the kindest thing you can do.

ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge!
This spring, the Ontario SPCA will be promoting our No Hot Pets campaign with the help of students across the province thanks to a partnership with ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge. This challenge is a six-week campaign with one goal: get high school students to volunteer in their community.
Youth will be asking the public to pledge to not leave their pets in cars. This important pet safety message will allow students to gain their community hours, learn about pet safety and help save lives! If you would like to join the youth volunteer team in your area, please go to your local Ontario SPCA website, click on the “Get Involved” tab and sign up for our Operation No Hot Pets event.
