March 2015 Welcome to NewsHound!
It's officially spring this week and pets everywhere will finally be able to enjoy more time outdoors. However, more pets outside can lead to more opportunities for pet reproduction, and in turn, litters of unwanted kittens and puppies.
Pet overpopulation is already at crisis levels in Ontario! The Ontario SPCA urges you to spay or neuter your pet and beat the spring heat. Learn more at fixyourpet.ca.

Abandoned “Jake” Touches our Hearts
Here at the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Branch, we often notice there are types of dogs that come to us more frequently than others. This is why “Jake”, a seven-month-old Boston Terrier, surprised us. His friendly personality and good looks made him a typically popular pet.
During his neuter procedure, vets realized he had a medical condition called a heart arrhythmia. Despite his health limitations, a young couple fell in love with him and committed to keeping his condition monitored by a veterinarian. He is now happy and healthy with his new canine brother “JoJo”!

Awesome Alex Volunteers!
Many people don’t realize how much maintenance and daily care an animal shelter and its occupants require. This is why we are so grateful for volunteers like Alex Ferris for dedicating her spare time to helping us out!
For the past year, she has been assisting the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Branch with adoption events at PetSmart and also comes in on the weekend to help with our cat rooms. Thank you to Alex and all of our volunteers for your amazing dedication to helping animals!

Midland Legion Supports our Branch
We were recently contacted by a representative from the Midland Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion who informed us we would be a receiving a very generous donation from their branch!
The Royal Canadian Legion is an essential support group for Veterans, and they also host and contribute to community events and services. We were honored to be chosen as the recipient for this donation.
The Ontario SPCA Midland & District Branch is grateful for the support of the Midland Legion, and to all of our nation’s dedicated servicemen, women and Veterans for their sacrifice.

March is Fix Your Pet Month!
Spaying and neutering your pet is such an important measure to help address pet overpopulation that the Ontario SPCA has dedicated the entire month of March to Fix Your Pet!
Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up homeless on the street or orphaned every year. Having your pet spayed or neutered will directly address this problem. The Ontario SPCA encourages the public to fix their pets and help reduce the number of unwanted pets.
Is your pet already spayed or neutered? Consider Spaying it Forward by donating the average price of a spay/neuter procedure to help an animal in need.
Fixyourpet.ca, it's the kindest thing you can do.

ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge!
This spring, the Ontario SPCA will be promoting our No Hot Pets campaign with the help of students across the province thanks to a partnership with ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge. This challenge is a six-week campaign with one goal: get high school students to volunteer in their community.
Youth will be asking the public to pledge to not leave their pets in cars. This important pet safety message will allow students to gain their community hours, learn about pet safety and help save lives! If you would like to join the youth volunteer team in your area, please go to your local Ontario SPCA website, click on the “Get Involved” tab and sign up for our Operation No Hot Pets event.
