March 2015 Welcome to NewsHound!
It's officially spring this week and pets everywhere will finally be able to enjoy more time outdoors. However, more pets outside can lead to more opportunities for pet reproduction, and in turn, litters of unwanted kittens and puppies.
Pet overpopulation is already at crisis levels in Ontario! The Ontario SPCA urges you to spay or neuter your pet and beat the spring heat. Learn more at fixyourpet.ca.

Injured Cocker Spaniel Makes Full Recovery
We recently had an elderly Cocker Spaniel come into the care of the Ontario SPCA Kent County Branch. She had been picked up as a stray and her coat was a tangled mess.“Bernadette” quickly showed us what a loveable, gentle lady she was.
After a health exam, it was determined Bernadette required surgery for a floating kneecap and torn ligament. As she recovered, news about this wonderful dog circulated through our community and a local resident knew she would be perfect for his aging parents. It was a match, and Bernadette has the forever home she deserves!

Matt Gives a Hand
We are happy to spotlight Matt Clark as one of our awesome volunteers this month. He has been with the Ontario SPCA Kent County Branch for just over a year and a great asset to the team.
Matt has handled tasks big and small, such as doing minor repairs at the shelter, transporting cats to the local PetSmart, assisting with a bottle drive fundraiser and even playing Santa Claus during our holiday “Pet Pics” fundraiser. He loves helping out when he can, and says it gives him a sense of accomplishment to know he’s helping animals in need.
Thank you Matt for all that you do!

Community Rallies at Soup Fundraiser
The only thing better than a warm bowl of soup on a cold winter’s day is a warm bowl of soup that helps save animals! Union Gas in Chatham held its annual Ontario SPCA Soup Day on February 11, 2015.
Staff and retirees were able to sample 17 different soups, from Santa Fe Corn and Curried Pumpkin to Thai Coconut Chicken and Mulligatawny. Between ticket sales, donations, and a 50/50 draw, over $1,100 was raised for the Ontario SPCA Kent County Branch!
We’re grateful for amazing support from the staff at Union Gas.

March is Fix Your Pet Month!
Spaying and neutering your pet is such an important measure to help address pet overpopulation that the Ontario SPCA has dedicated the entire month of March to Fix Your Pet!
Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up homeless on the street or orphaned every year. Having your pet spayed or neutered will directly address this problem. The Ontario SPCA encourages the public to fix their pets and help reduce the number of unwanted pets.
Is your pet already spayed or neutered? Consider Spaying it Forward by donating the average price of a spay/neuter procedure to help an animal in need.
Fixyourpet.ca, it's the kindest thing you can do.

ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge!
This spring, the Ontario SPCA will be promoting our No Hot Pets campaign with the help of students across the province thanks to a partnership with ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge. This challenge is a six-week campaign with one goal: get high school students to volunteer in their community.
Youth will be asking the public to pledge to not leave their pets in cars. This important pet safety message will allow students to gain their community hours, learn about pet safety and help save lives! If you would like to join the youth volunteer team in your area, please go to your local Ontario SPCA website, click on the “Get Involved” tab and sign up for our Operation No Hot Pets event.
