 Jane

Home for a Special Girl

“Jane”, a small Shih Tzu mix stray was brought into the Ontario SPCA Barrie Branch in terrible condition. The skin around her eyes looked raw and sore, and she wasn’t able to go to the bathroom. Upon a veterinary exam, it was suspected that Jane was suffering from a genetic disease that had slowly taken her vision. Jane also had bladder stones which were blocking her ability to relieve herself. This little girl was is a lot of pain.

Unfortunately, the only course of action to give Jane the quality of life she deserved was to remove her eyes.  After the surgery, it was apparent that this amazing little girl was already accustomed to not having her vision, only now she could live pain-free.

Tail wagging, and now letting staff know when she needed to go to the bathroom...she was ready for her new home. It didn’t take long for the perfect family to come along and fall in love with this special little girl.

Recognizing our Volunteers

National Volunteer Week is a time to recognize, celebrate and thank Canada’s volunteers. This year's National Volunteer Week took place from April 12-18, 2015, during which time the Ontario SPCA Barrie Branch celebrated our volunteers at our Volunteer Appreciation Event.

A fun time was had by those who were able to attend! Our Volunteers consist of mothers, fathers, grandparents, brothers, friends, teachers, lawyers, city workers, students, office workers, entrepreneurs, children, veterinarian technicians, veterinarians, waitress', factory workers, and so much more...but one thing we know, our volunteers consist of love, passion, and laughter.

Thank you for everything you do for the animals.

 Higgins

"Higgins" Needs Your Help

“Higgins”, a 9-week-old Labrador mix sustained injuries when he was accidentally stepped on by his owner. Unfortunately the owner wasn't able to care for the pup anymore and left Higgins with a family friend who took him to a local veterinarian.

Upon examination, Higgins’ leg was put in a splint and they started him on pain management.  He is scheduled for a follow up exam to assess his progress but may require further surgery.  Higgins is currently in foster care where his caretakers are hoping this sweet little puppy will rest enough to keep the splint in place to avoid having a pin put in.

Up to date, Higgins care will exceed $1,000 and should he require additional surgery, the cost of care can increase to more than $2,500.

We need your help!  Please consider donating to help Higgins and other animals like him.

No Hot Pets

No Hot Pets is Back!

Temperatures have already broken records in some areas of Ontario and calls are coming in to report pets being left in vehicles.

Tuesday, May 19th marks the official launch of the No Hot Pets campaign.

The Ontario SPCA wants to remind pet owners of the dangers of leaving pets unattended in a vehicle during the hot summer months.

Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows slightly open.

Don’t forget your pet and pledge to NOT leave your pet in a vehicle this summer.

Visit nohotpets.ca and help spread the word about the dangers of leaving pets in vehicles.
