SPCA Certified Farms Comes to Ontario
In Ontario, we take pride in purchasing locally grown foods and products that are farmed right in our communities. In an exciting move for Animal Welfare, the SPCA Certified program (originating from the BC SPCA) has made its way to Ontario!
The SPCA Certified program is a third-party farm certification and food labelling program dedicated to improving farm animal welfare in Canada. Harley Farms became the first Ontario farm certified in the program in 2014, and we hope other farms will enroll in the program.
The certification criteria includes improved animal housing, feed and water, transport and handling, and more. Consumers that purchase food grown and produced on SPCA Certified farms will know the farmers have exceeded national Codes of Practice in farm animal care.

Meet “Olaf” our Friends for Life! Walk™ Spokes Animal
“Olaf” came into the care of the Ontario SPCA after being abandoned by his owner at a local vet clinic, with a badly broken leg. The veterinarian determined that the only chance for Olaf to grow and develop normally was to have immediate surgery to try and repair the damage. He required a steel rod and screws to be inserted into the bone.
Olaf was looking at a long and slow recovery to repair the bone and muscle loss in his leg. Thankfully, with some care and support from the community, Olaf has made a full recovery from his injuries and has since been adopted into his forever home.

Newshound is Getting
a Make-Over
It’s time to take Newshound to the next level and we need your help! In order to make the Ontario SPCA newsletter the “must read” of all newsletters, we need your feedback.
Next month, rather than sending our usual edition of Newshound, we will be sending you a short survey to better understand what it is you want to see in the Ontario SPCA newsletter.
So if you have any suggestions, please make note of them and check your inbox mid August with a link to provide us with feedback. Your input is important to us!
We thank you for your loyal readership and from all the animals at the Ontario SPCA, we wish you a happy and safe summer.
