SPCA Certified Farms Comes to Ontario

In Ontario, we take pride in purchasing locally grown foods and products that are farmed right in our communities. In an exciting move for Animal Welfare, the SPCA Certified program (originating from the BC SPCA) has made its way to Ontario!

The SPCA Certified program is a third-party farm certification and food labelling program dedicated to improving farm animal welfare in Canada. Harley Farms became the first Ontario farm certified in the program in 2014, and we hope other farms will enroll in the program.

The certification criteria includes improved animal housing, feed and water, transport and handling, and more. Consumers that purchase food grown and produced on SPCA Certified farms will know the farmers have exceeded national Codes of Practice in farm animal care.

Listen to the latest Animals’ Voice Pawdcast Welcome BC SPCA Certified Program, to Ontario! with Brandy Street from the BC SPCA to learn more.

Multitasking Sue Helps Out

When it comes to organization and getting things done, we know that Sue is on the job!

Sue Hamilton is one of our valued volunteers, and really pitches in to help the animals of the Ontario SPCA Lennox & Addington Branch. She helps us with cleaning cat rooms, working at events, fostering kittens and anything else that needs attention at our shelter.

Thank you Sue for being so generous with your time, and for bringing such positive energy to our shelter!

Meet  “Bones” our Friends for Life! Walk™ Spokes Animal

“Bones” arrived at the Ontario SPCA Lennox & Addington Branch after being transferred from two other branches after not being able to find the right fit. Bones quickly became a staff favorite with his quirky personality and happy disposition.

In January of this year, the Hogan family visited him at the shelter. They knew his history and his challenging adoption journey, and decided that Bones was the one for them. He has become a forever member of their family and is now more than happy to say he’ll be walking in the Friends for Life! Walk™ in Napanee on September 19th, 2015 to raise money for dogs looking for homes just like he was not too long ago.

Help Bones raise money by registering for the walk, or donate to Bones’s personal fund raising page.

Keep your Pets Cool this Summer

It’s summer time!!!  Bring on the beach days and outdoor fun.

It’s important to stay cool during these hot days ahead. While humans can take necessary precautions to avoid heatstroke, your pets rely on you to keep them cool and safe.

There are a number of things you can do to keep your pet from overheating.  Read our latest blog post Keeping your Pet Cool this Summer for great tips on keeping your pets safe.

And remember to visit nohotpets.ca, take the pledge NOT to leave your pets unattended in hot vehicles and share the message with family and friends.

We can all do our part in keeping pets safe this summer. Call 310-SPCA if you suspect an animal in danger.

Newshound is Getting a Make-Over

It’s time to take Newshound to the next level and we need your help!  In order to make the Ontario SPCA newsletter the “must read” of all newsletters, we need your feedback.

Next month, rather than sending our usual edition of Newshound, we will be sending you a short survey to better understand what it is you want to see in the Ontario SPCA newsletter.

So if you have any suggestions, please make note of them and check your inbox mid August with a link to provide us with feedback.  Your input is important to us!

We thank you for your loyal readership and from all the animals at the Ontario SPCA, we wish you a happy and safe summer.

 Annual Report

Report to the Communities

2014 was a busy year for the Ontario SPCA as we continue to be a strong, collaborative organization dedicated to the cultivation of a compassionate Ontario for all animals.

Through collaborative work in our communities and the generosity of our donors and supporters, we have provided thousands of animals with a second chance.

Last year, a total of 6,879 animals were adopted into a forever homes, 17,991 complaints were investigated resulting in 2,756 orders issued and 348 charges laid, and a total of 16,309 spay neuter procedures performed.

This could not have been possible without your help! Together we are making a difference in the lives of animals. Thank you!

Read all about the life-saving work in the 2014 Annual Report to our Communities.
