"Swatch" Meets her Match

Meet “Swatch”, an adorable 3-year-old cat with a lot of love and cuddles to give. Swatch is in need of a new home after the unfortunate passing of her owners back in May.

When Swatch came to the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre (PEAC), the staff quickly fell in love with this adorable cat. The volunteers loved spending time with her and you would often find someone in her room giving her a cuddle or a brush.

Finally on August 30th, 2015 Swatch’s new forever family walked in the door. “I was so happy when this lovely young couple came in and immediately asked if they could visit Swatch, I knew this was it,” says Shelby, one of the adoption coordinators at PEAC.

We are all so happy Swatch will get a fresh start in her new home.

 Amex Volunteers

A Summer of Corporate Volunteering

It was a great summer for corporate volunteering at the Ontario SPCA, mainly thanks to the American Express (AMEX) employees who gave so much of their time.

Over the last couple of months, a total of 87 employees dedicated over 28 hours on six separate days. From painting and repairs, to power washing windows and building feral cat shelters, AMEX employees put their best foot forward.

A special thank you to everyone who got involved. Your generosity will go a long way in the care of the animals.

 Friends for Life Walk

Friends for life! Walk™ Takes Place this Weekend

The Ontario SPCA’s Friends for life! Walk™ is really heating up! This year’s walk will prove to be the best one yet. With so many exciting new activities, we know it will be fun for the whole family.

We are so lucky to have Good as Gold K9 School joining us this year with their incredible team of agility dogs showcasing their skills. Walk participants will also have the opportunity to have their pet participate in the agility course and even earn a certificate!
We will also be introducing a very exciting vendor market place this year, with some awesome vendors and booths to explore. There will be a delicious gourmet BBQ group to serve up some delectable eats, and of course our kids’ corner with a bouncy castle, face painting and unlimited popcorn, candy floss and snow cones.

This year we have a special offer, if you raise $100 you will be entered for a chance to win a $1000 travel voucher from Travel Nation Canada!

You don’t want to miss this year’s Friends for life! Walk™, so register today at friendsforlifewalk.ca.

Medric and Thai

A Day in the Life of a Service Dog

“Thai” isn’t your average dog. She is a sweet girl with a pretty important job….to keep her owner Medric Cousineau, who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), safe.

Read more on How Therapy Dogs Help with PTSD.

Not all dogs can be service dogs. “The ability to stay curled up under a table, for three hours, for a dog, it’s a skill. It’s an acquired, trained, skill,” says Cousineau.

Have you ever wondered if your dog has what it takes to be a service dog?

Check out the latest video A Day in the Life of a Service Dog to learn more about Medric and Thai, and what qualities to look for in a service dog.

No Hot Pets

No Hot Pets Campaign a Huge Success

The 2015 No Hot Pets campaign has now come to a close and we would like to thank everyone who helped to spread the word about the dangers of leaving pets in hot vehicles.

The campaign was a huge success, with close to 100 SPCAs, Humane Societies and Rescue Groups across Canada participating. The campaign reached millions of viewers online and saw thousands of people sign the online pledge.

With your help, we were able to save pets’ lives this summer! We look forward to launching the campaign again in May 2016.

 Pet Anxiety

Separation Anxiety and Your Pet

It’s back to school and back to routine. For many of us, that means having to leave our pets home alone for longer periods of time.

A change in schedule and routine can lead to many pets experiencing separation anxiety as they aren’t used to the quieter household.

If your pet is displaying any of these symptoms, they may be experiencing separation anxiety:

•  Urinating and Defecating
•  Barking and Howling
•  Chewing, Digging and Destruction of household
•  Escaping from where confined when left alone, or separated from guardian
•  Pacing in a fixed pattern when separated

If you feel your pet is displaying separation anxiety, there are resources that can help you address the issues.
