Puppies Abandoned in Garbage Bag get a Second Chance at Life

The Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre has some very special puppies in its care that survived a traumatic start to life.

A Midland resident found eight puppies inside a garbage bag on the side of Baseline Road South on Oct. 14. It is not known how long the puppies had been there, but they were estimated to be between three and five days old and still had their umbilical cords attached. They were rushed to the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre, but sadly four puppies did not survive.

Fortunately, the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre had a nursing dog in its care. She had just been surrendered with her own full-grown puppies, who were ready to find their forever homes, and willingly accepted her adopted babies.

Tragically, we recently lost the smallest of the four surviving puppies. This poor little guy had been doing well, but took a turn for the worst. He was failing to thrive and his little body just wasn’t strong enough to fight anymore. We did everything we could, but he couldn’t be saved.

It was an emotional day for our staff and volunteers. We have all grown quite attached to these fuzzy little guys. The community has also rallied behind them, and we can’t thank you enough for your support.

The three surviving puppies are in foster care and are being monitored closely. We’re hopeful that they will continue to grow stronger with every passing day. If everything goes according to plan, they are expected to be available for adoption in early December through the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre.

Please consider making a special gift today to ensure these puppies, and other animals in need, get the life-saving care they deserve. Your support can change an animal’s life.
